Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger experienced a widespread outage on Sunday morning, with thousands of users across the globe reporting problems accessing the platforms.

Many users encountered error messages while attempting to log in to Facebook’s desktop site. According to outage-tracking platform DownDetector, reports of issues with Instagram and Facebook occurred in New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and other cities in India.

The error stated, “Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes.”

Meanwhile, as per Downdetector, Facebook received 4,808 outage reports from users in the United States as of 0746 GMT, with nearly 63% of complaints related to problems accessing the website.

Instagram also recorded 2,829 reports from U.S. users experiencing issues with the app as of 0818 GMT on Sunday. Reuters‘ checks found that access to both Facebook and Instagram was intermittent in Singapore as well. Meta did not immediately respond to its request for comment sent via email.

Instagram users shared following error message, stating, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can”.

Netizens react

One of the users said, “‘no posts coming up on feed after refresh.” “Okay i literally thought i was the only one,” another user said on X. “Yep happening to me here in the UK, cant access desktop version. any idea when this might be resolved?,” a user mentioned.

“The website doesn’t work for me too, but the mobile app still works. Unfortunately I also cannot use the call feature of messenger. It tells me that my app is outdated but I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it and still get the same error,” a Reddit user remarked.

Previous outages

Elon Musk’s social media platform X was mostly restored after thousands of users worldwide reported disruptions on June 22, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.com.

The outage started around 9:00 a.m. ET, with reports in the United States crossing 25,000 before dropping to around 620, based on data collected by Downdetector from multiple sources.

In Canada, reported issues declined to nearly 30 from a peak of over 3,400, while the UK also saw a fall in outage reports after they had surpassed 9,000 earlier in the day.

The number of users impacted may vary, as Downdetector’s figures are based on reports submitted by users.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, said on June 12 that some users were experiencing difficulties accessing its social media platforms.

According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, more than 62,000 users had reported problems with Facebook, while over 8,000 reports were logged for Instagram as of 10:11 am ET. Downdetector compiles outage data based on user-submitted reports and information gathered from multiple sources.

The company’s spokesperson Andy Stone took to X and mentioned, “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”

More than 1,00,000 users reported issues with Facebook, whereas Instagram was done for over 10,000 users, according to Downdetector.
