Anthropic has confirmed that the AI startup will be opening its first office in India in Bengaluru in early 2026. The company says its new office will be help it serve the ‘rapidly growing AI ecosystem’ and the demand for Claude AI in India.

The San-Francisco based company also confirmed that its CEO and co-founder Dario Amodei will be visiting India this week to ‘meet with public officials and enterprise partners’. Earlier reports have stated that the Anthropic CEO may also meet with PM Narendra Modi along with cabinet ministers.

In a statement about the Indian expansion, Amodei said, “India’s AI ecosystem will play a central role in how AI develops globally and democratically, and we’re looking forward to working with organizations in India to pave a path for how beneficial AI can be scaled in a way that serves everyone.”

“We see remarkable promise in India’s innovation ecosystem – the vibrant startup and developer communities alongside Indian enterprises are building solutions that impact millions of lives globally.” added Paul Smith, Anthropic’s Chief Commercial Officer.

India ranks second in global consumer usage for Claude:

Anthropic also added that India ranks second globally in consumer usage for Claude AI in its Economic Index Report, second only to the US. The company says that a ‘disproportionately large amount’ of Claude usage in India is for technical and programming-related tasks like mobile UI development and web app debugging.

​The company also added that large Indian enterprises like CRED are relying on Claude for their coding-related work.

​Anthropic also detailed that it is continuing to advance support for Indic languages. The company says its AI chatbot is already available in Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu.

​Earlier in the year, Anthropic’s top rival OpenAI had also announced that India is its second-biggest market after the US. The company had also launched a 399 ChatGPT Go plan to give extended access to its GPT-5 model.
