China orders government officials to not use iPhones at work: Report – Crypto News

China has ordered all central government employees to not use Apple’s iPhones and other foreign devices for official work, The Wall Street Journal reported. The new directive is an attempt by China to cut reliance on foreign technology and limit the flow of sensitive information outside of the country.

According to the WSJ report, China has restricted government officials at some agencies from using the iPhones for several years but the recent order signifies an attempt to ensure that the rule is strictly followed. China has also been directing its agencies and state-owned companies to replace foreign technology with indigenous alternatives that are viewed as safe and controllable.

The tensions between China and the US have been with the latter working with its allies to keep Beijing from accessing the equipment it needs to keep its chip industry competitive, Reuters reported.

The WSJ report added that the Chinese government had restricted the use of Tesla vehicles by state-owned companies and military staff in 2021 owing to concerns that the data gathered by these cars could be a source of national security leaks.
