China probes Google for breaking anti-monopoly law, following fresh US tariffs – Crypto News

China on Tuesday announced that it was launching an anti-trust investigation on Google over the tech giant’s alleged violation of the anti-monopoly law. An official notification by the Chinese State Administration for Market Regulation confirmed an investigation has been opened against the Android maker in accordance with the law.

Google is already under the scanner for its monopolistic practices including in its home country where the company lost a crucial case last year. However, the timing of when China announced the new action against Google is suspect given that the investigation came shortly after Trump administration’s 10 percent tarrifs on US goods came into effect.

While Google search and the tech giant’s other internet services have been unavailable in China since 2010, the company still retains a prescence in the Asian country primarily around its advertising business, Bloomberg reported.

Apart from Google, China has also taken action against the US fashion group PVH Corp (owner of companies like Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein), and added them to its ‘unreliable entities list.

Google’s regulatory troubles at home:

In August last year, Google had lost a case against US Justice department and the court had found it guilty of violating antitrust laws by maintaining monopolistic control over the search and advertising markets.

“After having carefully considered and weighed the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” the ruling stated.
