The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) skyrocketed on Wednesday, surging over 6% on the day and returning to the 40,000 handle after the Trump administration announced yet another pivot on its own tariff policies.

According to US President Donald Trump, all “non-retaliating” countries will see an immediate 90-day suspension on “reciprocal” and 10% tariffs, although China does not get to enjoy any such tariff relief. Tariffs on Chinese goods have been raised even further to 125% in retaliation for China’s own retaliatory 84% tariff on all goods from the US.

In 2024, Mexico, China and Canada accounted for 42% of total US imports. In this period, Mexico stood out as the top exporter with $466.6 billion, according to the US Census Bureau. Hence, Trump wants to focus on these three nations when imposing tariffs. He also plans to use the revenue generated through tariffs to lower personal income taxes.
