In a recent development, Google is reportedly poised to drop the apps of 10 prominent companies in India, including well-known matrimony apps, amid an escalating dispute over service fee payments.

According to a report from Reuters, the disagreement revolves around startups’ efforts to resist Google’s imposition of a hefty 11 percent to 26 percent fee on in-app payments in India. This comes after antitrust authorities had directed Google to dismantle its previous system, which charged fees ranging from 15 percent to 30 percent.

As per the publication, court decisions in January and February, including one by the Supreme Court, have effectively permitted Google to enforce the fee or remove apps, denying relief to startups. Google’s notices of Play Store violations have been sent to Indian companies like Matrimony.com, the operator of BharatMatrimony, and Info Edge, which runs Jeevansathi. Executives from both companies are currently reviewing the notices and contemplating their next steps.

Shares of Matrimony.com and Info Edge fell by 2.7 percent and 1.5 percent respectively after the news broke. The stocks have since recovered. At 1.35 pm, Matrimony.com was at 545, and Info Edge was at 5,291.15.
