Google’s upcoming Pixel 8 series will offer two phones – Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. While the company is yet to officially announce the series, the rumor mill is churning out expected features that may come with the new smartphone. According to a latest report, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro may come with upgraded sensors along with improvements made to camera hardware.

A report by Android Authority states that the Pixel 8 The series may feature the Samsung ISOCELL GN2 sensor – an upgrade from the ISOCELL GN1. Compared to its predecessor, the GN2 is larger and has the ability to capture 35% more light. The sensor also supports 8K/30fps video capture.

In addition, the primary camera on Pixel 8 Pro may see a jump from the existing 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor to a 64MP Sony IMX787 sensor as available on the Pixel 7a.

As per the report, the 64MP sensor is almost twice the size and is aimed to improve the quality of the ultrawide camera. Google has also bumped it from a 0.56x zoom ratio to 0.49x. However, the macro mode is currently disabled on the Pixel 8 Pro. it is likely that Google may enable the feature later, or perhaps kill it off.

Coming to the Pixel 8, the handset may feature the same Sony IMX386 ultrawide sensor but it may have a 0.55x zoom ratio. The telephoto camera on the Pixel 8 Pro appears to remain the same 5x module as the Pixel 7 Pro.

In addition, the Google 8 Pro may offer an improved time-of-flight (ToF). Android Authority states that the device has a new 8×8 ToF VL53L8 sensor which should make the autofocus much more reliable.

In terms of software, the Pixel 8 series may offer some new low-level feature enhancements like adaptive torch, segmentation AWB and video bokeh blur level selection. Adaptive torch feature will dynamically adjust the flash intensity based on the scene, thus preventing overexposed shots and making low-light photography better on Pixel phones. The segmentation AWB will primarily distribute the screen into different parts using AI to selectively apply different processing.
