Rockstar Games is planning to announce the long-awaited sequel to the Grand Theft Auto series – GTA VI – this week, while the trailer for the game could be released the following month to coincide with Rockstar Games’ 25th anniversary celebrations, Bloomberg reported.

GTA VI’s predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V, is the second best-selling game of all time with 185 million copies sold, second only to Minecraft, which has the added bonus of being playable on mobile phones.

The Bloomberg report noted that hackers released hours of early gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto VI last year. Rockstar had blamed the leak on a ‘network intrusion’ and vowed to ‘properly’ introduce the public to GTA VI when it was ready.

Ahead of the popular game’s launch, Rockstar Games, a division of Take-Two Interactive Software, has been working to clean up its corporate culture and improve work-life balance after employees complained of burnout following the launch of the company’s last game of 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2.

While Rockstar has confirmed that the company is currently working on GTA VI, other details have been hard to come by. The excitement surrounding GTA VI has reached a fever pitch, with fans going so far as to search for a secret tease for GTA VI during an update to Read Dead Online, IGN reported.

When will GTA VI be released? 

While exact release date for GTA VI isn’t yet clear, earlier industry analysts expected the game to be out in 2024 fiscal year that runs from April 2023 to March 2024.

What’s new with GTA VI? 

GTA VI is set in a fictional version of Miami and will feature two protagonists – male and female, Bloomberg reports. An earlier report noted that Rockstar’s first female protagonist will be Latina and inspired by the pairing of bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde. The Bloomberg report from earlier this year also noted that, unlike previous GTA games, the developers are being careful not to “punch down” by making jokes about marginalised communities.

As per leaks from gaming website Games Radar quoted by Bloomberg, GTA VI could feature a modern-day Vice City-like setting with fresh gameplay mechanics and improved AI.
