Microsoft is investing A$5 billion (US $3.2 billion) with a focus on expanding cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure in the country in the next 2 years. The new investment will help Microsoft grow its data centres across  Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne by 45% from 20 sites to 29.

The investment was announced during Australia PM Anthony Albanese’s four day visit to the visit where he joined Microsoft President Brad Smith, and Microsoft Australia and New Zealand Managing Director Steven Worrall.

As part of the agreement, Microsoft will work with Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) on developing a ‘Cyber Shield’ to protect the Australian people from cyber threats. 

Microsoft CEO Brad Smith in a post on X wrote, “This investment in infrastructure, digital skills, and cyber security is our largest investment in Microsoft’s 40-year history in Australia and a testament to our commitment to the country’s growth and prosperity in the AI era.”

In a statement about the investment, Microsoft noted that the company has announced, “major digital infrastructure, skilling and cybersecurity investments in Australia to help the nation seize the artificial intelligence (AI) era to strengthen its economic competitiveness, create high-value jobs and protect the nation from the increasing threat of cyberattacks.”

Speaking to the reporters after the announcement of new investment, Albanese said (as quoted by AFP), “We know that this is having an impact on all companies. We know as well, that this is about individuals and the protection of who they are,”

He also said that Microsoft’s partnership with the signals directorate will help improve Australia’s capacity to identify, prevent and respond to cyber threats.

Later in a post on X, Albanese said that the ‘partnership will ensure Australia’s place as a world-leading digital economy.’
