Lenovo has unveiled the world’s first transparent laptop at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 event in Barecelona, showcasing a 17.3 inch spectacle which looks straight out of a science-fiction movie. The ThinkBook Transparent Concept features a borderless screen, transparent keyboard area, and a floating footpad design. 

The laptop comes with a 17.3 inch screen with borderless screen with up to 55 percent transparency with its pixels set to black and turned although the display does get less see-through as the pixels light up. The concept laptop has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, The Verge reported.

The key draw is its bezel-less 17.3-inch MicroLED display, which offers up to 55 percent transparency when its pixels are set to black and turned off. But as its pixels light up, the display becomes less and less see-through, until eventually, you’re looking at a completely opaque white surface with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and a 720p resolution.

However, unlike most premium offerings, the Lenovo Thinkpad Transparent does not feature an AMOLED panel and instead houses a MicroLED display. The MicroLED display is touted to deliver better saturation, transparency, brightness and image quality compared to its OLED alternative, reported Times of India. 

Lenovo did not detail any hardware related specifications of its latest transparent offeirng while sharing that it runs on Windows 11 operating system, similar to many other premium offerings.

When will the transparent laptop be available? 

Like its predecessor, the rollable laptop which was unveiled at MWC last year, the latest transparent laptop is also a proof of concept but Lenovo’s executive director of ThinkPad portfolio, Tom Butler told The Verge that the company has ‘very high confidence’ that this technology will  translate into a real laptop in the next five years.
