Telegram-linked TON faces double outage – Crypto News

on

The Open Network (TON), a blockchain platform originally developed by Telegram, is back up and running after experiencing its second major outage in just 36 hours. The disruptions were caused by an influx of traffic from DOGS, a recently launched meme coin.

According to information on its official Telegram channel, the network’s native cryptocurrency, Toncoin (TON), was offline from 7:17 pm UTC on August 28 and returned to full functionality around 1:00 am UTC on August 29. The latest disruption, lasting over six hours, marks the second significant interruption in TON’s services within a 36-hour window.

Prior to that, an outage took place on August 27 around 11:00 pm UTC and lasted for approximately six hours until services were restored at 5:30 am UTC the next day.  Both incidents have been linked to a significant increase in network activity that occurred after the launch of DOGS, operating on the TON’s blockchain.

What is the hype around DOGS on TON?

Introduced in July 2024 and made available for trading on August 27, DOGS has led to significant congestion on the TON network by the first day of trading. For context, Within 10 hours of its debut, the meme coin recorded over $1.7 billion in trading volume.

Marketed as the ‘most Telegram-native meme coin,’ DOGS draws inspiration from Spotty, Durov’s dog. The token’s popularity has been further amplified by Durov’s arrest in France on August 24, which has heightened interest and activity surrounding DOGS.

So much so that the official Telegram channel for DOGS has seen a rapid increase in popularity, amassing approximately 17 million subscribers in less than two months following the token’s proposal. For context, Durov, 39, was apprehended on Saturday evening at Paris Le Bourget Airport as he disembarked from a private jet.

The Russian-born entrepreneur was eventually charged with a wide range of crimes for failing to prevent illicit activity on the app and barred from leaving the country. The French authorities indicted him for his complicity in managing an online platform that enabled illegal transactions by an organized group, which could lead to a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Durov was also charged with his involvement in crimes such as enabling the distribution of child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking and fraud, and refusing to cooperate with law enforcement. This has left the crypto community speculating about potential implications for Telegram and its associated blockchain projects.

After the network’s restoration, Toncoin witnessed an uptick, with its price increasing by 8% over 24 hours to reach $5.57, according to data from CoinGecko. However, the token’s price has dropped by 17% over the past week, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the network in recent days.

Overall, the series of disruptions has raised questions about the blockchain’s robustness and ability to handle massive surges in activity. As the situation unfolds, the TON community faces the challenge of ensuring that the network can handle such surges in activity in the future, particularly as DOGS continues to draw significant attention and trading volume.

The recent events have highlighted the vulnerabilities that can arise from the rapid adoption of new tokens on blockchain networks. Despite that, TON, the blockchain protocol integrated into the Telegram messaging platform, has asserted that it remains fully operational.
