Telegram users in the U.S. can now transfer crypto as easily as sending a message.

Telegram has rolled out a new crypto feature, dubbed TON Wallet, to users in the United States, enabling people to send, receive, and store digital assets directly within the messaging app.

The feature, built on The Open Network (TON) blockchain, is available directly within the Telegram app and does not require any additional downloads or extensions, according to a press release viewed by The Defiant.

Users can send and receive crypto like Tether’s USDT stablecoin, Toncoin (TON), and even non-fungible tokens (NFTs) directly in chats. It also includes built-in tools for viewing market charts, analyzing tokens, and making low-fee swaps through Ston.fi, a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the TON blockchain with a total value locked (TVL) of $65 million.

The release claims that this is the first time a self-custodial crypto wallet is available inside a major U.S. messaging platform. The U.S. launch is part of the broader global rollout of the TON Wallet, which serves as the primary wallet in the TON ecosystem.

It allows users to access blockchain-based features within Telegram, including payments, decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, games, and marketplaces such as Fragment, a Telegram-based platform for digital collectibles.

“We’ve embedded crypto natively into Telegram, not as an add-on, but as part of how people

already communicate,” said Andrew Rogozov, CEO of The Open Platform (TOP) and Wallet in Telegram. “With Wallet in Telegram, sending digital assets feels as simple as sending a message, no friction, no extra steps. At the same time, users stay in full control of their keys and funds.”

Rogozov added that this isn’t just a wallet, but a “self-custodial gateway” to Web3 right inside an app that millions use every day. According to the press release, Telegram has over 87 million users in the U.S. Meanwhile, more than 100 million people around the world activated the TON Wallet last year.

The TON network experienced rapid growth through most of 2024, but a sharp drop in August erased much of its TVL, which fell from over $760 million to $310 million in less than a month. The decline has continued since then, with TVL now standing at $160 million, according to DeFiLlama. Most recently, TON raised $28.5 million in new funding at a $1 billion valuation.

Currently, Toncoin (TON) is trading at $3.26, down 3% on the day but up 10% over the past week, according to data from CoinGecko.
