{"id":103233,"date":"2023-06-02T06:18:29","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T06:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/index.php\/2023\/06\/02\/losses-from-crypto-rug-pulls-outpaced-defi-exploits-in-may-beosin-crypto-news\/"},"modified":"2023-06-02T06:18:31","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T06:18:31","slug":"losses-from-crypto-rug-pulls-outpaced-defi-exploits-in-may-beosin-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/losses-from-crypto-rug-pulls-outpaced-defi-exploits-in-may-beosin-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Losses from crypto rug pulls outpaced DeFi exploits in May: Beosin\n &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-v-3af9fd0a=\"\">\n<p>The amount of cryptocurrency lost to &#8220;rug pull&#8221; or &#8220;exit scams&#8221; \u2014 where founders suddenly up and leave with investors&#8217; money \u2014 had outpaced the amount stolen from decentralized finance (DeFi) projects in May, a blockchain security firm has revealed.<\/p>\n<p>A June 1 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@Beosin_com\/blockchain-security-monthly-recap-of-may-19-69m-lost-in-total-979a1dd57b\">reports<\/a> from Beosin said in May total losses from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/crypto-rug-pulls-what-is-a-rug-pull-in-crypto-and-6-ways-to-spot-it\">rug pulls and scams<\/a> reached over $45 million across six incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there were 10 attacks on decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols that netted only $19.7 million.  The amount is a nearly 80% decrease from April and losses from these types of exploits had been on the decline for two months, it added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rug Pull Outpaces Attacks: The total amount involved in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/rugpull?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#rugpull<\/a> reached $45.02 million, surpassing losses from attacks<\/p>\n<p>2\/5<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Beosin Blockchain Security (@Beosin_com) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Beosin_com\/status\/1664171533064081409?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 1, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The largest of such rug pulls was the $32 million that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/project-takes-off-with-31-6m-in-alleged-exit-scam\">crypto project Fintech<\/a> is alleged to have made off with on May 24. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/jimbos-protocol-offers-open-bounty-after-hacker-ignores-deal\">$7.5 million attack<\/a> on the DeFi platform Jimbo&#8217;s protocol was the largest attack last month according to Beosin.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ben-eth-psyop-memetokens-face-legal-sec-scrutiny\"><strong><em>Could Ben.eth&#8217;s PSYOP tokens face legal scrutiny?  It depends, say lawyers<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hackers and scammers are gradually shifting the target of their attacks from various project parties to ordinary users,&#8221; Beosin wrote.<\/p>\n<p>It recommended crypto users \u201craise their anti-fraud awareness,\u201d undertake due diligence on a project before investing and learn how to better safeguard their crypto.<\/p>\n<p>Beosin also warned against using shared or public charging devices for mobile phones as these could potentially be modified to inject malicious programs that could compromise private keys.<\/p>\n<p>In April, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a similar warning that the use of free charging stations such as those found at airports should be avoided.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers.
