And their respective leaders are sparring directly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s Twitter replacement Threads has come out swinging, rocketing toward 100 million users in its first week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The toe-to-toe tiff started with a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/147447\/threads-app-goes-live-early\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">surprise attack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u2014Threads launched earlier than expected, feature incomplete but capitalizing on a very bad week for Musk and Twitter.  The initial flurry of Threads signups has continued apace, and 93 million users, who are largely converted Instagram users, have joined the app so far, according to data platform <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quiverquant.com\/threadstracker\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Quiver Quantitative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Twitter owner Elon Musk spared little time in launching a counter-offensive.  On Saturday, he uncurled a jab at Zuckerberg&#8217;s new platform, arguing Threads is a dumbed-down version of Meta&#8217;s Instagram that&#8217;s devoid of what he claims was its main, visual draw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">&#8220;Threads is just Instagram minus pics, which makes no sense, given that thirsty pics are the main reason people use that app,&#8221; Musk said.  \u201cHow many times have you read comments on Insta pics and wished there were more?  Personally, never.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet mx-auto\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Accurate assessment. But no challenger thus far has the same heft as Zuckerberg&#8217;s Threads, backed by one of the biggest names in tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The 93 million Threads accounts represent a sizeable challenger to Twitter&#8217;s current user base.  Musk&#8217;s bird app had 368 million users as of December of last year, a figure that&#8217;s projected to decline over the course of this year, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/303681\/twitter-users-worldwide\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">A light slap by comparison, BlueSky has been downloaded 1 million times by iOS and Android users, according to the app store intelligence provider. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.data.ai\/en\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">data.ai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">,  And as an invite-only platform, its number of users is undoubtedly less.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Nostr appears to be a non-factor as well.  Measuring users is less <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/137589\/decentralized-twitter-alternatives-bluesky-and-nostr-are-growing-with-some-growing-pains\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">straightforward<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">  because of the social media protocol&#8217;s technical elements, but it could have as many as 23 million users, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stats.nostr.band\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Nostr.Band<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Overall, these figures are peanuts compared to Meta&#8217;s topline number of users across its so-called family of apps: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.  Meta had 3.8 billion users total in the first quarter of this year, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/947869\/facebook-product-mau\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Thread&#8217;s ability to lean on Meta&#8217;s established accounts has led some Twitter commentators to cry foul. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Scott Melker, host of &#8220;The Wolf Of All Streets Podcast,&#8221; described early signup stats for Threads as &#8220;incredibly misleading&#8221; because of Facebook and Instagram users&#8217; ability to essentially opt-in to a new feature.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet mx-auto\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I keep seeing this stat, but it&#8217;s incredibly misleading. Twitter has reportedly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/twitter-is-threatening-sue-meta-over-threads-semafor-2023-07-06\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">threatened to sue Meta<\/a>accusing Zuckerberg&#8217;s company of poaching Twitter employees to work on Threads and \u201ctrade secrets and intellectual property<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Twitter had also recently notched a victory of its own, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/147473\/twitter-state-money-transmitter-licenses-payments-x-app\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">securing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">  three state money transmitter licenses last week.
