In the past, they&#8217;ve done so because they intend to sell it\u2014but not always.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\" style=\"display:inline-block\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">It is likely this stash comes from its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/113752\/bitcoin-silk-road-siezed\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">biggest seizure<\/a> yet: In November 2021 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/113752\/bitcoin-silk-road-siezed\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">cops took $3.36 billion in BTC<\/a> after hacker James Zhong confessed to stealing digital assets from the illegal Silk Road marketplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The feds have since been selling the crypto bit by bit;  in march <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/125081\/us-government-dumps-seized-silk-road-bitcoin\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">sold<\/a> $215 million-worth of the &#8220;digital gold.&#8221;  At the time, they said they plan to dump another $1.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Silk Road was an online black market which mostly sold illegal drugs before authorities shut it down in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">James Zhong pleaded guilty last year to wire fraud after the government alleged that he manipulated the Silk Road transaction system in 2012 to pocket 50,676 bitcoins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">He kept the stash hidden for 10 years until it ballooned to a value of $3.3 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Today&#8217;s movements show that the government-controlled wallets sent a total of 9,825 bitcoin\u2014worth $301 million at today&#8217;s prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The crypto community tends to keep an eye on large and well-known BTC holders because when they move large amounts of funds, it impacts the price of the asset, according to experts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Previous movements\u2014or even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/138086\/bitcoin-plunges-7-in-an-hour-to-under-28000-as-mt-gox-us-gov-wallets-move\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">suspected movements<\/a>\u2014have sent the price of the largest cryptocurrency by market cap into a nosedive.
