{"id":124183,"date":"2023-07-18T19:16:40","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T19:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/chatgpt-creator-faces-first-major-regulatory-threat-with-ftc-investigation-crypto-news\/"},"modified":"2023-07-18T19:16:43","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T19:16:43","slug":"chatgpt-creator-faces-first-major-regulatory-threat-with-ftc-investigation-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/chatgpt-creator-faces-first-major-regulatory-threat-with-ftc-investigation-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT Creator Faces First Major Regulatory Threat With FTC Investigation\n &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">With artificial intelligence (AI) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/ai-art-vs-ai-generated-art-everything-you-need-to-know\/\">flying high for web3<\/a> and the wider the world to see and embrace, it shouldn&#8217;t be a surprise that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has turned its attention to OpenAI, the maker of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/how-a-digital-artist-used-chat-gpt-to-create-a-50m-meme-coin\/\">Chat GPT<\/a>In a new investigation, according to an initial report by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/07\/13\/ftc-openai-chatgpt-sam-altman-lina-khan\/\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a>, <\/p>\n<p>The agency sent the San Francisco startup a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/documents\/67a7081c-c770-4f05-a39e-9d02117e50e8.pdf?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\">20-page letter<\/a> demanding answers for how it is addressing ongoing complaints of misuse of consumer data and cases of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/research\/improving-mathematical-reasoning-with-process-supervision\">hallucinations<\/a>,\u201d ie, instances where ChatGPT has made up facts or narratives that have caused reputational harm.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-ftc-s-ask\">The FTC&#8217;s ask<\/h2>\n<p>OpenAI will now serve as the FTC&#8217;s first public case study for how the agency begins to enforce consumer protection warnings with respect to AI while addressing potentially unfair or deceptive trade practices.  The company&#8217;s co-founder Sam Altman testified before Congress in May, inviting AI legislation to come into the mix.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, the FTC wants to gauge how well consumers understand &#8220;the accuracy or reliability of outputs&#8221; generated by the company&#8217;s AI tools, calling on OpenAI to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide detailed descriptions of all the complaints the startup has received of its products, including ChatGPT, making \u201cfalse, misleading, disparaging or harmful\u201d statements about people;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide records related to a security incident that OpenAI disclosed in March when a system bug allowed some ChatGPT users to see payment-related information in addition to customer data from other user&#8217;s chat history;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide any research, testing, or surveys that assess customers&#8217; understanding of how OpenAI&#8217;s products work, how they&#8217;re advertised, and how these AI-based tools can generate disparaging statements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-zooming-out\">zooming out<\/h2>\n<p>The FTC&#8217;s focus comes at a time when the agency wants to explore <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2023\/04\/03\/chatgpt-misinformation-bias-flaws-ai-chatbot\/11571830002\/\">several instances<\/a> To install hallucination.
