{"id":137846,"date":"2023-09-02T04:57:28","date_gmt":"2023-09-01T23:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/?p=137846"},"modified":"2023-09-02T04:57:28","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T23:27:28","slug":"multiple-base-crypto-projects-lose-more-than-1m-to-malicious-players-in-24hrs-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/multiple-base-crypto-projects-lose-more-than-1m-to-malicious-players-in-24hrs-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple Base crypto projects lose more than $1M to malicious players in 24hrs &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Two crypto projects, RocketSwap and SwirlLend, on Coinbase-backed layer2 network Base have lost more than $1 million to malicious players in the last 24 hours.<\/p>\n<h2>SwirlLend rugpulls<\/h2>\n<p>SwirlLend rug pulled over $460,000 on two blockchain networks, including Base, earlier today, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CertiKAlert\/status\/1691744747948302354?s=20\">CertiK.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SwirlLend is a lending platform based on Linea and Base. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/protocol\/swirllend\">Data<\/a> from DeFillama shows that the total value of assets locked on the protocol plunged to less than $50 from a peak of $769,440 recorded on Aug. 15.<\/p>\n<p>SwirlLend\u2019s social media accounts have been deleted, and its website was no longer accessible as of press time.<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain security firm Peckshield <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeckShieldAlert\/status\/1691722297433039140?s=20\">reported<\/a> that SwirlLend\u2019s <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">deployer had bridged $290,000 in cryptos from <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">Base<\/span><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> to <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">Ethereum. Additionally, the attacker <span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">bridged 94 <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/ethereum\/\">ETH<\/a><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> from <\/span>Linea<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> to <\/span>Ethereum<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> via Orbiter Finance Bridge.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>RocketSwap hacked<\/h2>\n<p>On Aug. 15, RocketSwap confirmed that it suffered a brute force attack that led to the loss of an undisclosed amount.<\/p>\n<p>Peckshield <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeckShieldAlert\/status\/1691268504396374016\">estimated<\/a> that the losses were around <span class=\"s4\">471 ETH, equivalent to $865,000,<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and noted that the hacker bridged the funds from Base to Ethereum. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">\u201cDue to the proxy contract linked to our farm contract, multiple high-risk permissions became vulnerable,\u201d RocketSwap said. \u201cThis resulted in the unauthorized transfer of the farm\u2019s assets. Immediate steps were taken to shut down the farm and halt further potential risks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">The decentralized exchange <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RocketSwap_Labs\/status\/1691258298409029632?s=20\"><span class=\"s7\">announced<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"> an emergency program to redeploy a new farm contract that will be open-sourced on-chain. It added that it would contact the hacker to return the funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">However, some affected users <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Patterabytes\/status\/1691308121581670400?s=20\"><span class=\"s7\">believe<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"> that this was a rug-pull by the team itself and are also <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/demonbird_\/status\/1691268357545447424?s=20\"><span class=\"s7\">criticizing<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s4\"> the project for locking comments and making it impossible for users to reach out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the RocketSwap attacker created two memecoins named LoveRCKT and LoveRCKT 2.0, and the value of both assets rapidly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeckShieldAlert\/status\/1691660149084377577?s=20\">plunged<\/a> after he removed liquidity from them.<\/p>\n<h2>Base becoming a fertile ground for bad actors<\/h2>\n<p>While <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/defi-total-losses-breach-77b-as-july-records-largest-loss-of-2023-with-389m-stolen\/\">DeFi exploits<\/a> are common occurrences within the crypto space, Base is quickly becoming notorious for projects rug despite its relatively <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coinbases-ethereum-layer-2-chain-base-is-live-to-the-public\/\">new launch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">BALD memecoin was one of the first projects on the L2 network and reached an $85 million market cap before it was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/obscure-meme-coins-surge-10000-on-coinbase-backed-base-network\/\">rugged<\/a> by its creator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Another project, FrensTech, was allegedly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UniswapVillain\/status\/1690216623041372161\">rug pulled<\/a> by the AzFlin, a former employee of Uniswap. AzFlin withdrew 14 ETH in liquidity from the project, bankrupting it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">The incident led to his eventual dismissal from the decentralized exchange, with <\/span>Uniswap CEO Adam Hayden <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/haydenzadams\/status\/1690395983773880321?s=20\">saying<\/a> the company does not condone such behavior. However, AzFlin has vehemently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AzFlin\/status\/1690226696597680128?s=20\">denied<\/a> claims that he rugged the project.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s4\">Despite the rug pulls and exploits, Base has seen increased adoption.
