The threat of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has ground much of Hollywood to a halt<\/a> in recent weeks, but veteran voice actor <\/span>Ben Prendergast<\/span><\/a> doesn’t believe that AI has much of a future when it comes to replacing talent.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s the whole reason SAG-AFTRA and the Writer\u2019s Guild are striking right now,\u201d Prendergast told <\/span>Decrypt <\/span><\/i>in an interview.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Australian actor has worked in theater, film, television, and video games. In the world of gaming, he\u2019s known for voicing the bombastic Australian gunman Fuse in Electronic Arts\u2019 first-person shooter Apex Legends, the god Tyr in Sony\u2019s God of War Ragnarok, and Patroclus in the award-winning Hades from Supergiant Games.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prendergast likened AI-powered actors and voices to the invention of 3D movies\u2014an imperfect innovation that he doesn\u2019t believe will have long-term appeal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was watchable, but it didn\u2019t resonate with your humanity,\u201d Prendergast said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Movies with glasses-based 3D effects gained traction in 2009 with films like James Cameron\u2019s \u201cAvatar,\u201d but interest had largely <\/span>fizzled out by 2017<\/span><\/a> as the feature was broadly considered a gimmick. In 2021, 3D films represented <\/span>just 6%<\/span><\/a> of the global box office take\u2014a statistic that suggests audiences have lost interest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prendergast argued that audiences won\u2019t buy into an AI-generated actor because the performance won\u2019t ever be real enough to feel like a true human connection\u2014and the \u201cuncanny valley\u201d effect will distract viewers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven with the best technology in the world, you get to a certain point,\u201d Prendergast said. \u201cBut the receiver of the information, the audience\u2014even if they just know that it\u2019s AI, it\u2019s completely divorced from connecting with another human being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Prendergast\u2019s concerns join the chorus of voice actors who have raised other concerns around AI models, from <\/span>using voice actors\u2019 work<\/span><\/a> to train their own learning models without contacting or compensating talent to <\/span>one Skyrim mod<\/span><\/a> even using AI to \u201cclone\u201d real actors\u2019 voices for game-themed pornography without their consent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike AI models, actors can draw from their personal experience to inform their performances. Prendergast shared the main inspiration that helped him bring Fuse to life in Apex Legends.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m doing Fuse in the booth, I still am channeling my dad, who\u2019s still with us\u2014and he sounds a lot like Fuse,\u201d Prendergast said. \u201cThat becomes close to me, and I\u2019m actually offering my father out to the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To help create Fuse, Prendergast worked with Sam Gill, the lead writer for the character, to fine-tune voice lines and offer countless different interpretations of tone and pitch. That ability to adjust, riff, and try fresh takes is something he thinks AI can\u2019t match.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t think AI can write that and then produce that with my voice in a way that I can do it,\u201d Prendergast said. \u201cI can do a line in 100 different ways. But it\u2019s down to my artistry as to which way that I choose to do the line that I know from experience is going to resonate most with the other character and the thing that I\u2019m doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Human intuition, vocal range, and infinite variations on delivery are essential elements of voice acting that Prendergast doesn\u2019t see AI replacing. There\u2019s no telling what the future holds, but he remains confident that humans will continue to have a leg up over generative AI soundalikes… at least for now.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat might come back to bite me,\u201d he added. \u201cBut look: If I\u2019m out of a job, I\u2019m out of a job. But I do know story, I do know lore, and I do know how audiences react to real-ass actors. And it\u2019s not what the producers out there think it is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
