With its latest rollout in Canada<\/a>, Coinbase\u2019s VP of international business development Nana Murugesan said the exchange is \u201cgoing deep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs part of a two-pronged international strategy,\u201d he told Decrypt<\/i>, \u201c\u2018go deep\u2019 refers to 1:1 highly localized strategy in markets that have clear regulatory frameworks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coinbase<\/i> executed the launch via a tie-up with another open banking platform called Trustly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with Trustly allows users a more seamless experience to make deposits, withdrawals, and high-value daily transaction limits,” a spokesperson told Decrypt<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Part two of the strategy is to \u201cgo broad,\u201d which entails a one-to-many offering of products and services across markets, such as its recently launched \u201cwallet as a service<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the executive, Canada is special because it offers \u201cregulation by engagement,\u201d unlike its American counterparts which Murugesan said use \u201cregulation by enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canada was in the news<\/a> in late June when a cohort of thirty Canadian lawmakers published a report<\/a> backing crypto and blockchain technology, with 16 recommendations for the nation\u2019s government to create a national strategy on the topic.\u201d<\/p>\n

That said, some authorities have sent mixed signals.<\/p>\n

Coinbase unfazed by Canada\u2019s crypto stutter<\/h2>\n

Several enterprises have withdrawn<\/a> or paused<\/a> their operations in Canada, citing regulatory constraints, and the country\u2019s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued<\/a> hefty criticism against pro-crypto opposition leaders.<\/p>\n

Still, Lucas Matheson, Canada\u2019s country manager for Coinbase<\/a> appeared unfazed by these apparent double takes. \u201cTheir regulatory environment is based on principles,\u201d he told Decrypt<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Matheson also pointed to a growing Web3<\/a> ecosystem in Canada, as well as a strong developer ecosystem\u2013both more than enough reasons to establish a hub in the country, he claimed.<\/p>\n

The positive regulatory news comes in stark contrast<\/a> to the legal issues Coinbase is facing stateside. Nonetheless, the company\u2019s executives are bullish\u2013especially in lieu of the recent announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to harmonize traditional finance with crypto,\u201d said Murugesan.<\/p>\n
