Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX has reached a $175 million settlement with collapsed crypto lender Genesis, following a nearly $4 billion claim made on behalf of FTX\u2019s failed sister company, trading firm Alameda Research<\/span><\/p>\n

Documents filed Wednesday show that Genesis has agreed to pay FTX the sum after the debtors in May <\/span>accused<\/span><\/a> the crypto lending firm of being \u201cone of the main feeder funds for FTX and instrumental to its fraudulent business model.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the documents, current FTX CEO John J. Ray III described the settlement as \u201cfair and equitable,\u201d and that the agreed-upon amount is \u201cwell within the range of reasonableness.\u201d The settlement must still be approved by judges in each bankruptcy case.<\/span><\/p>\n

FTX had originally tried to recover approximately $3.9 billion from Genesis. The Digital Currency Group-owned Genesis <\/span>halted<\/span><\/a> customer withdrawals in November after the collapse of FTX. It was one of many crypto firms to go bust following a turbulent 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alameda Research was a crypto trading company set up by FTX co-founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. It crashed when digital asset behemoth FTX went bust, taking all of its affiliated companies with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The massive crypto brand <\/span>unexpectedly went bankrupt<\/span><\/a> in November, and the 31-year-old Bankman-Fried was later <\/span>arrested<\/span><\/a> in the Bahamas. Prosecutors allege that he mismanaged the exchange and committed fraud in \u201c<\/span>one of the most abrupt and difficult<\/span><\/a> collapses in the history of corporate America,\u201d in the words of James Bromley, counsel to FTX\u2019s new management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Disgraced crypto mogul Bankman-Fried\u2014also known as SBF\u2014was <\/span>jailed<\/span><\/a> last week after a judge found probable cause to believe he had tampered with witnesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He is facing a number of criminal charges\u2014including <\/span>allegedly using<\/span><\/a> stolen customer cash to make \u201ccontributions to Democrats and Republicans to seek to influence cryptocurrency regulation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bankman-Fried\u2019s trial is expected to start in October.<\/span><\/p>\n
