Artists will now only be able to indicate their preferred creator fee, which buyers can choose to pay effectively as a tip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Existing collections on non-<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-ethereum-quickly-explained-four-minute-guide\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">Ethereum<\/a> blockchains, and projects that opted to use OpenSea\u2019s Operator Filter\u2014a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/116768\/opensea-changes-nft-royalties-creator-pushback\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">controversial tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> that prevented collections from being sold by competing platforms that themselves <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/121768\/blur-opensea-ethereum-nft-trading-skyrockets\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">made creator fees optional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, and rewarded that loyalty with enforced creator fees on OpenSea\u2014will be able to guarantee creator fees until February 29, 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet mx-auto\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Starting Aug 31, we\u2019ll:<br \/>&#8211; seller side<\/p>\n<p>More below:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 OpenSea (@opensea) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/opensea\/status\/1692224335136633075?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">August 17, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">At that point, NFT creator fees will be fully optional, platform-wide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">To be clear, creator fees aren\u2019t going away\u2014simply the ineffective, unilateral enforcement of them,\u201d OpenSea co-founder and CEO Devin Finzer said in a company <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/blog\/articles\/creator-fees-update\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> this afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">OpenSea declined to comment Thursday when contacted by <i>Decrypt<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Today\u2019s development marks the latest shift in a long-escalating disruption of the NFT industry, one spurred by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/111821\/magic-eden-market-share-solana-nft-royalties\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">the arrival last fall<\/a> of upstart NFT marketplaces that slashed creator royalties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Some, like leading marketplace Blur, generated massive amounts of trading volume with the gamified deployment of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/121326\/nft-traders-flex-blur-airdrops-most-tokens\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">lucrative token airdrops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> that were valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars and benefited loyal users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/115382\/why-opensea-nft-creator-royalties\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">November 2022 interview with <i>Decrypt<\/i><\/a>, Finzer defended OpenSea&#8217;s decision at the time to stick with creator royalties and enforce them, despite the emergence of competing platforms that undercut such artist protections. At the time, he pointed to OpenSea&#8217;s &#8220;leadership in the space&#8221; in support of creators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Though OpenSea had reigned for years as the unchallenged behemoth of NFT marketplaces, Blur\u2019s aggressively free-market approach soon upended that status quo. By February, Blur <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/121768\/blur-opensea-ethereum-nft-trading-skyrockets\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">overtook OpenSea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> as the top NFT trading platform by trading volume, prompting OpenSea to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/121638\/opensea-drops-fees-royalty-protections-blur-rises\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">reduce its royalty fee protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> to remain competitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">OpenSea\u2019s elimination of enforced creator fees altogether signals the company\u2019s enduring struggle to retain users in the face of challengers who are content to do away with certain cultural norms in the crypto community\u2014namely, the prioritization of the rights of creators.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet mx-auto\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/opensea?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">@opensea<\/a> touting decentralization as one of the reasons to remove royalty enforcement, but then positioning themselves as the ones to come up with ways on how creators can innovate to find more revenue streams is this year&#8217;s joke.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BETTY (@betty_nft) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/betty_nft\/status\/1692319664540663927?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">August 17, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In response to OpenSea\u2019s announcement, other NFT marketplaces that still enforce creator royalties took the opportunity to lambast the decision. Notable NFT artists and project creators have also taken to social media to rebuke the move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cRoyalties on secondary sales are fundamental to the NFT art revolution\u2026 [and] core to artist sovereignty, and the future of this movement,\u201d SuperRare co-founder and CEO John Crain said in a statement. \u201cIt&#8217;s unfortunate to see a trend going back on this as an industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Several matters beyond creator royalties further complicate OpenSea\u2019s fate. For one, the company still takes a 2.5% platform fee from every NFT transaction; Blur levies no such fee. The more recent OpenSea Pro version of the marketplace <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/121638\/opensea-drops-fees-royalty-protections-blur-rises\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">skips the platform fee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, however, albeit with conditions tied to paying creator fees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:sm:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Furthermore, NFT marketplaces are fighting more and more aggressively over a steadily shrinking pie. OpenSea has generated about $82 million worth of trading volume in the last month, while Blur has generated $271 million in the same period, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dappradar.com\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">DappRadar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.
