Pitman ruled that the smart contracts deployed by Tornado Cash count as \u201cproperty\u201d subject to sanctions under the Office of Foreign Assets Control\u2019s regulatory definitions.<\/li>\n<li>In May, six Tornado Cash users <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.ctfassets.net\/c5bd0wqjc7v0\/6UF4IrKU07F1tWhnBT678a\/fea1f8fecc839b9f625519247e8e938e\/Plaintiffs-_Summary_Judgment_Reply___Response.pdf\">challenged<\/a> the legitimacy of the sanctions against the company. They argued that the government-led sanctions violated users\u2019 First Amendment rights to free speech. The court rejected the claim, finding no evidence the government\u2019s actions had impacted their freedom of speech.<\/li>\n<li>Coinbase Global\u2019s chief legal officer Paul Grewal waded into the debate Friday. He wrote on X, formally Twitter, that the cryptocurrency exchange will continue to back the Tornado Cash plaintiffs\u2019 arguments, despite the court\u2019s decision against them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rights are rarely secured on a path that is always \u2b06\ufe0f and \u27a1\ufe0f.
