Six months ago, StarkWare promised to open-source their STARK prover.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Now the team is making good on the pledge. The prover is a core piece of technology underpinning the Starknet zk-rollup, which StarkWare released on mainnet<\/a> in 2021, and gave a major upgrade<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n Ethereum\u2019s scaling roadmap relies on moving transaction execution off of mainnet onto rollups<\/a>, which bundle bunches together. Zk-rollups submit proofs of transaction batches, thus saving scarce blockspace on the Ethereum network.<\/p>\n The prover is \u201ca vital component within our tech stack,\u201d StarkWare<\/a> president and co-founder Eli Ben Sasson told Blockworks. \u201cWe view it as the magic wand of STARK technology, [that] plays a key role in helping to scale Ethereum.\u201d<\/p>\n The company said the move \u201cis a major step forward in decentralizing Starknet\u201d in a blog post<\/a> published Tuesday.<\/p>\n Polygon was the first to open-source their prover<\/a>, albeit using the AGPL v3 open-source license. Matter Labs has pledged to follow-suit with its zkSync version.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong> Polygon and Matter Labs compete on zkEVM rollups<\/a><\/p>\n A spokesperson for Polygon declined to comment on StarkWare\u2019s latest initiative. Matter Labs couldn\u2019t be reached by time of publication.<\/p>\n Starkware has previously been criticized<\/a> for having a closed-source prover, although open-sourcing this component was always a goal.
