And they\u2019re impacting businesses too, according to a new report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Deepfakes are AI-generated creations like images, videos, and audio manipulated to deceive people. Scammers use deepfakes for fraud, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/143479\/fbi-warning-ai-extortion-sextortion-deepfake-scams\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">extortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, or to damage reputations. The proliferation of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-generative-ai-the-technology-that-can-teach-itself\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">generative AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> tools has made it easier than ever for scammers to create fake content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Celebrities and other public figures are being inserted into artificial and sometimes explicit footage without their consent in ways that sometimes go viral or can cause panic on social media. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In a report provided to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, global accounting firm <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/xx\/en\/home.html\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">KPMG<\/a> wrote that the business sector is not immune to the deepfake threat, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Deepfake content can be used in social engineering attacks and other types of cyberattacks targeted at companies, KPMG wrote, while such content can also impact the reputations of businesses and their leaders. False representations of company representatives can also be used in schemes to scam customers, or to convince employees to provide information or transfer money to illicit actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">KPMG <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/thomasbrewster\/2021\/10\/14\/huge-bank-fraud-uses-deep-fake-voice-tech-to-steal-millions\/?sh=425dcfc47559\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">cited a 2020 example<\/a> of a Hong Kong company branch manager who was duped into transferring $35 million worth of company funds to scammers after believing his boss was on the phone, ordering him to do so. Instead, it was an AI-cloned recreation of the supervisor&#8217;s voice\u2014all part of an elaborate scheme to swindle money from the firm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThe consequences of cyberattacks that utilize synthetic content\u2014digital content that has been generated or manipulated for nefarious purposes\u2014can be vast, costly, and have a variety of socioeconomic impacts, including financial, reputational, service, and geopolitical, among others,\u201d the report reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Deepfake footage of Donald Trump being <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/124972\/midjourney-free-ai-image-generation-stopped-over-deepfakes\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">arrested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> earlier this year, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/151745\/pope-warns-of-ais-disruptive-possibilities\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Pope Francis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> wearing Balenciaga luxury apparel, and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/101365\/deepfake-video-elon-musk-crypto-scam-goes-viral\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Elon Musk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> promoting crypto scams have gone viral in the last year as deepfake technology has improved thanks to evolving AI tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s cheap fakes or deepfakes, the economic model has shifted significantly because of generative AI models,\u201d KPMG wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Beyond the public figures mentioned above, prominent celebrities whose likenesses have been stolen and applied to faked footage include actress Emma Watson and musician Taylor Swift. But it\u2019s the potential impact to businesses and their sometimes prominent leaders that KPMG is raising the alarm about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cAs a risk factor, deepfake content is not merely a concern for social media, dating sites, and the entertainment industry\u2014it is now a boardroom issue,\u201d KPMG said. \u201cCase in point, nearly all respondents (92%) of a recent KPMG generative AI survey of 300 executives across multiple industries and geographies say their concerns about the risks of implementing generative AI is moderately to highly significant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">It\u2019s not just businesses and celebrities that are dealing with the rise in both the quality and number of deepfake videos on the internet. Governments and regulators are also reckoning with the potential impact on society and elections, while the creators of such AI tools are weighing their potential negative impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Last week, the U.S. Federal Election Commission, anticipating the use of deepfakes in the 2024 election, moved forward with a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/152725\/federal-elections-commission-ai-deepfakes-2024-elections\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> to prohibit using artificial intelligence in campaign ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">If approved, the agency would amend current regulations regarding fraudulent misrepresentation of \u201ccampaign authority,\u201d and clarify that the prohibition applies to deliberately deceptive AI campaign advertisements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cRegulators should continue to understand and consider the impact of evolving threats on existing regulations,\u201d Matthew Miller, Principal of Cyber Security Services at KPMG, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. \u201cProposed requirements for labeling and watermarking AI generated content could have a positive impact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In July, researchers at MIT <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/150216\/deepfake-image-protection-mit-immunization\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">proposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> adding code changes to large diffusion models to mitigate the risk of deepfakes, by adding tiny changes that are hard to see but ultimately change how the models work, causing them to generate images that don&#8217;t look real. Meta, meanwhile, recently <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/145034\/meta-new-ai-speech-tool-ready-made-deepfakes\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">held back an AI tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> due to its deepfake potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The excitement around the creative potential of generative AI tools has been tempered by the realization that they can similarly create opportunities for malicious content. Ultimately, amid rapid improvements for such tools, Miller urged everyone to be vigilant about the potential for fake content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThe public needs to maintain continuous vigilance when interacting through digital channels,\u201d he told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> \u201cSituational awareness and common sense go a long way to prevent an incident from occurring.
