It is currently available to a limited number of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/vertex-ai\">Vertex AI<\/a> customers who are using <em>Imagen,<\/em> one of Google\u2019s text-to-image generators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This invisible watermark is embedded directly into the pixels of an image created by Imagen and remains intact even if the image undergoes modifications such as filters or color alterations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SynthID: A new tool for watermarking and identifying AI-generated content\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fs9iKpaMfvY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Beyond just adding watermarks to images, SynthID employs a second approach where it can assess the likelihood of an image being created by Imagen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The AI tool provides three \u201cconfidence\u201d levels for interpreting the results of digital watermark identification:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cDetected\u201d <\/strong>\u2013\u00a0 the image is likely generated by Imagen<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cNot Detected\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 the image is unlikely to be generated by Imagen<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cPossibly detected\u201d <\/strong>\u2013 the image could be generated by Imagen. Treat with caution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the blog post, Google mentioned that while the technology \u201cisn\u2019t perfect,\u201d its internal tool testing has shown accuracy against common image manipulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo Credit: Google DeepMind<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to advancements in deepfake technology, tech companies are actively seeking ways to identify and flag manipulated content, especially when that content operates to disrupt the social norm and create panic \u2013 such as the fake image of the Pentagon being bombed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/news\/european-union-digital-product-passport-fashion-sustainability\/\">EU<\/a>, of course, is already working to implement technology through its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/code-practice-disinformation\">EU Code of Practice on Disinformation<\/a> that can recognize and label this type of content for users spanning Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, and other social media platforms.\u00a0The Code is the first self-regulatory piece of legislation intended to motivate companies to collaborate on solutions to combating misinformation. When it first was introduced in 2018, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/eu-code-of-practice-on-disinformation\/\">21 companies<\/a> had already agreed to commit to this Code. <\/p>\n<p>While Google has taken its unique approach to addressing the challenge, a consortium called the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), backed by Adobe, has been a leader in digital watermark efforts. Google previously introduced the \u201cAbout this image\u201d tool to offer users information about the origins of images found on its platform.<\/p>\n<p>SynthID is just another next-gen method by which we are able to identify digital content, acting as a type of \u201cupgrade\u201d to how we identify a piece of content through its metadata.
