To achieve this feat, facilitators <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/worldcoin.org\/blog\/announcements\/demand-world-id-sign-up-record-argentina\">onboarded<\/a> participants at an average rate of less than nine seconds per person, according to an Aug. 31 announcement from the project.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Argentina is one of the world\u2019s leading countries for blockchain innovation &amp; crypto adoption. That reputation was reinforced recently, as demand for World ID led to 9.5K Orb verifications in 24 hours\u2014a new global record. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DEMx1Yda2O\">https:\/\/t.co\/DEMx1Yda2O<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Worldcoin (@worldcoin) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/worldcoin\/status\/1697184634419794029?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 31, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Argentina has Worldcoin facilitators in 38 different locations, according to the project\u2019s website. Most locations are in the country\u2019s capital city of Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n<p>Worldcoin is a blockchain-based project that allows individuals to prove they&#8217;re human by having their irises scanned. When a user verifies their humanness, they are given a \u201cWorld ID\u201d that can be integrated into future applications to prove they are not a bot or artificial intelligence program. The project was founded by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, who argued that human IDs would be needed in the future as artificial AI programs become more sophisticated and less distinguishable from humans.<\/p>\n<p>Worldcoin <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/openai-creator-launches-worldcoin\">launched on July 25<\/a> and almost immediately came under criticism from data privacy advocates. Critics claimed that it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/worldcoin-controversy-explained-in-latest-cointelegraph-report\">is too centralized<\/a> and could easily leak users\u2019 biometric data, leading to negative consequences for users.<\/p>\n<p>In their Aug. 31 post, the team claimed that many Argentinians are signing up for World IDs anyway, despite the controversy. \u201cThere was a significant increase in demand for World ID verifications in countries around the world [after launch],\u201d they stated. This \u201ccontinued into August, which saw 9.5K Argentinians verify their World ID in a single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The post also stated that the surge in signups caused the Worldcoin app to \u201ctemporarily become the number one app in Argentina on the App Store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoiner-javier-milei-wins-argentina-presidential-primary\"><strong>Bitcoin-friendly Javier Milei wins most votes in Argentina primary election<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Worldcoin gives its native coin, WLD, to new users after they sign up. Currently, the signup bonus is 25 WLD, which is worth approximately 10,239.48 Argentinian Pesos (ARS) or $29.25 on the open market. According to cost-of-living data from travel website Expatistan, this is enough to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expatistan.com\/cost-of-living\/country\/argentina?currency=USD\">buy<\/a> two meals from the \u201cbasic lunchtime menu\u201d in the business districts of major cities within Argentina. The coin hit an all-time high on launch day, when the 25 WLD bonus was worth approximately 23,791 ARS, or $68.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/worldcoin.org\/faqs\">claims<\/a> that it \u201cis fully compliant with all laws and regulations governing biometric data collection and data transfer.\u201d In response to criticism, the Argentinian government has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/argentine-agency-investigation-worldcoin-biometric-data\">opened an investigation<\/a> of Worldcoin&#8217;s privacy practices.
