{"id":146783,"date":"2023-09-01T20:32:50","date_gmt":"2023-09-01T15:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/?p=146783"},"modified":"2023-09-01T20:32:50","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T15:02:50","slug":"robinhood-bought-back-sam-bankman-frieds-stake-from-us-govt-for-606m-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/robinhood-bought-back-sam-bankman-frieds-stake-from-us-govt-for-606m-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Robinhood bought back Sam Bankman-Fried&#8217;s stake from US govt for $606M &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-v-2649fa34=\"\">\n<p>Cryptocurrency and stock trading platform Robinhood has announced the purchase of more than 55 million shares of the firm previously held by former FTX CEO <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/top-people-in-crypto-and-blockchain-2023\/sam-bankman-fried-and-caroline-ellison\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a>, also known as SBF.<\/p>\n<p>According to an Aug. 31 blog post, Robinhood <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.aboutrobinhood.com\/robinhood-announces-purchase-of-shares-previously-owned-by-emergent-fidelity-technologies\/\">completed<\/a> a purchase of 55,273,469 shares for roughly $606 million following a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The shares, originally held by Bankman-Fried and FTX co-founder Gary Wang through Emergent Fidelity Technologies, were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/us-doj-announces-seizure-of-55m-robinhood-shares\">seized in January<\/a> by the U.S. Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>The purchase had been expected. Robinhood\u2019s board of directors <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/robinhood-board-gives-nod-to-buy-sam-bankman-fried-s-578m-stake\">announced the approval<\/a> of the deal in the company\u2019s Q4 2022 report, and an Aug. 30 SEC filing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ix?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/0001783879\/000178387923000201\/hood-20230830.htm\">said<\/a> the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York had approved the purchase \u201cfree and clear of any claims, interests, liens and encumbrances\u201d. Robinhood made the repurchase agreement with the\u00a0U.S. Marshal Service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are happy to have completed the purchase of these shares and look forward to executing on our growth plans on behalf of our customers and shareholders,\u201d said Robinhood chief financial officer Jason Warnick.<\/p>\n<p>Emergent Fidelity Technologies, Bankman-Fried\u2019s holding company, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sam-bankman-fried-s-holding-company-files-for-bankruptcy\">filed for bankruptcy<\/a> in February. The company had already <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/blockfi-sues-sam-bankman-fried-over-shares-in-robinhood\">been a target<\/a> of crypto lending firm BlockFi \u2014 which filed for bankruptcy following the collapse of FTX \u2014 over the 55 million Robinhood shares pledged as collateral.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sam-bankman-fried-lawyers-argue-previous-ftx-legal-team-act-in-good-faith\"><strong><em>Sam Bankman-Fried\u2019s lawyers argue previous FTX legal team led him to act \u2018in good faith\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amid FTX\u2019s own bankruptcy proceedings, SBF, BlockFi, and FTX creditor Yonathan Ben Shimon had been fighting legal battles over ownership of the roughly $600 million in Robinhood shares. Bankman-Fried\u2019s legal team argued the former FTX CEO had a claim to the assets to pay for his criminal defense. Currently remanded to jail following a judge revoking his bail on Aug. 11, Bankman-Fried is expected to appear in court for his first trial starting on Oct. 3. <\/p>\n<p>The price of Robinhood shares on Nasdaq increased roughly 4% following the purchase, from $10.85 to $11.34 at the time of publication.
