However, in times of extreme volatility, they can lose their peg to those assets, either dropping or rising in value relative to the asset they aim to represent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Historically, instances of USDT losing its peg to the U.S. dollar have been linked to various factors, including its issuer Tether&#8217;s redemption fee, reduced liquidity in the market, and the minimum redeemable amount requirements established by Tether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Kaiko analyst Riyad Carey, however, introduced a new metric called &#8220;depeg severity,&#8221; which is based on a stablecoin&#8217;s total trading volume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The severity threshold for depegging decreases as the trading volume increases, whereas the value lost due to peg deviations increases as a stablecoin&#8217;s trading volume grows.<\/p>\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet mx-auto\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">USDT has been depegging all month. Why hasn&#8217;t anyone noticed?<\/p>\n<p>In this week&#8217;s Deep Dive we propose a novel method of rating stablecoin depegs, check it out below \u2b07\ufe0f<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/o8LuiTMSqW\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">https:\/\/t.co\/o8LuiTMSqW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kaiko (@KaikoData) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KaikoData\/status\/1697261046472540307?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">August 31, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">While other stablecoins like TUSD, BUSD, DAI, and USDC also experienced minor depegging events over the course of the year, the report suggests they were relatively more stable and less sensitive to deviations from the U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-2ed2039d-2 hmmXcn gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #dfe2e4\">USDT&#8217;s consistent discount is &#8217;cause for concern&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The most severe incident for USDT this year to date, per the report, occurred on August 7 at around 8 am UTC, when USDT traded at a 2% discount compared to its $1 peg on nearly every trading platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">This depegging event followed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/riyad_carey\/status\/1689301055245275136\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">reports<\/a> of approximately $500 million in net selling of USDT across major crypto exchanges like Binance, Huobi, and Uniswap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cUSDT has a peg stability problem. Its redemption fee and minimum means it\u2019s often rational for USDT holders to sell the token on the market rather than redeem it for USD with Tether,\u201d wrote Carey. \u201cAs liquidity has dwindled, the market is no longer able to absorb significant USDT selling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">According to the analyst, the USDT depegs \u201care not huge\u201d in price terms, however, \u201cits consistent discount is cause for concern and could seriously erode trust if it continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In response to these findings, Carey suggested that Tether should consider removing its redemption fee and minimum requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">&#8220;The redemption fee is a USDT-specific problem. USDC does not have such a fee; stablecoin issuers currently make most of their money from the yield they earn on the USD deposits that they hold,&#8221; Carey told <i>Decrypt<\/i>. &#8220;Given the U.S.&#8217;s high rate environment, I see no reason why USDT keeps its redemption fee intact unless it is actually intended to reduce redemptions. If that&#8217;s the case, it&#8217;s short-sighted because it makes USDT&#8217;s peg worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Currently, Tether <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tether.to\/en\/fees\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">charges<\/a> a 0.1% fee for fiat withdrawals over $1,000, meaning that USDT is redeemable at $0.99, with the minimum fiat withdrawal or deposit set at $100,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Another catch is that users have to pay a non-refundable amount of $150 for \u201cverification,\u201d which, according to Tether, \u201cis intended to ensure that only those who are serious about establishing an account apply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cThe obvious solution is for Tether to remove its redemption fee and minimum,\u201d argues Carey. \u201cTether <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/150678\/tether-reports-850-million-q2-profit-72-billion-exposure-to-us-treasuries\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">reported<\/a> an $850mn profit in Q2; removing the fee would not have a significant effect on profits unless the company believes that making redemptions cheaper would significantly decrease USDT\u2019s supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Tether didn\u2019t immediately reply to <i>Decrypt<\/i>\u2019s requests for comments.<\/p>\n<div class=\"my-4 border-b border-decryptGridline\">\n<div class=\"text-left p-8 md:py-12 md:px-12 max-w-prose relative\"><span class=\"border-t-4 border-l-4 w-4 h-4 md:border-t-[6px] md:border-l-[6px] md:w-6 md:h-6 border-decryptPurple dark:border-decryptNeon gg-dark:border-cc-pink-2 absolute top-4 left-4 md:top-6 md:left-6\" \/><span class=\"border-t-4 border-l-4 w-4 h-4 md:border-t-[6px] md:border-l-[6px] md:w-6 md:h-6 border-decryptPurple dark:border-decryptNeon gg-dark:border-cc-pink-2 absolute rotate-180 bottom-4 right-4 md:bottom-6 md:right-6\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"font-akzidenz-grotesk font-bold text-xl md:text-3xl mb-6 md:text-center gg-dark:text-white\">Stay on top of crypto news, get daily updates in your inbox.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USDT, the crypto industry\u2019s largest stablecoin by market capitalization, has experienced a slight depeg throughout nearly all of August, according to a recent Kaiko research.
