The government is <\/span>reportedly<\/span><\/a> crafting legislation to freeze and track North Korean cryptocurrency assets. This proactive measure seeks to cut off a significant revenue stream for North Korea\u2019s illicit weapons programs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Curbing Illicit Financing<\/b><\/h2>\n

After ten months of intense deliberations, President Yoon Suk Yeol recently announced plans for the new bill. Significantly, the revised legislation is more potent than its predecessor since it incorporates specific tactics to \u201ctrack and neutralize\u201d cryptocurrencies stolen by North Korea in various cyberattacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, the bill underscores the need for practical strategies to bolster South Korea\u2019s national security. Consequently, it promises to serve as a robust framework for stemming the tide of digital thefts orchestrated by the North.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strengthening South Korea\u2019s National Cybersecurity<\/b><\/h2>\n

Besides the legislation, South Korea is doubling down on its cybersecurity efforts. A national cybersecurity committee directly overseen by the president, is in the pipeline. This committee aims to fortify South Korea against international hacking attempts, which evolve in complexity and scale. The chief of the National Security Office will head this pivotal committee, and the National Intelligence Service director will also serve as a key member.<\/span><\/p>\n

Estimates suggest <\/span>North Korea<\/span><\/a> stole approximately $1.28 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2022 alone. Furthermore, the FBI has identified six Bitcoin wallets worth around $40 million linked to the North Korean hacking group Lazarus. Hence, the urgency for stringent cybersecurity measures has never been higher.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new legislative and administrative measures are part of a larger campaign to crush North Korea\u2019s missile and nuclear programs. According to a new study, up to half of North Korea\u2019s missile development is financed by <\/span>cybercrime<\/span><\/a>, including digital currency theft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, there is a growing realization that international collaboration, especially with China and Russia, is critical to addressing this problem successfully.<\/span><\/p>\n
