A plurality of experts believe the United States should create a new federal agency dedicated to artificial intelligence governance, according to a survey conducted<\/a> by Axios, Generation Lab, and Syracuse University.<\/p>\n The survey polled 215 computer science professors across 65 of the most prestigious universities in the U.S. on topics related to AI. <\/p>\n we polled 213 computer science professors on A.I.<\/p>\n w\/ @axios<\/a> + @SyracuseU<\/a> pic.twitter.com\/mEDFabWkZy<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 The Generation Lab (@Generation_Lab) September 5, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n According to the data, when asked \u201cWhat is the best entity to regulate AI,\u201d the majority of respondents answered either \u201cnew \u201cDepartment of AI\u201d government agency\u201d (37%) or \u201cglobal organization or treaty\u201d (22%).<\/p>\n Only 16% answered \u201ccongress,\u201d just two percent higher than the number of respondents who chose \u201cirrelevant: AI cannot be regulated.\u201d The final 10% of respondents split their answers between \u201cthe White House\u201d (4%), \u201cthe private sector\u201d (3%), and \u201cnone: AI should not be regulated\u201d (3%).<\/p>\n The survey also contained questions about how the AI sector will affect the future of employment. The majority of respondents indicated that they would advise a young person to pursue a career in AI, engineering, and data science. <\/p>\n At the other end of the spectrum, 31% of the professors polled said they\u2019d advise against seeking a career in media and 19% said the same about the arts when asked which fields young people should avoid. \u201cNone of the above” was the most common response with 42%. <\/p>\n\n
