The loans are worth over $600 million in total.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GGC filed the complaints against Digital Currency Group (DCG) and DCG International Investments (DCIG) in the Southern District of New York Bankruptcy Court. GGC and DCGI are both owned by DCG. <\/p>\n<p>According to the complaint against DCGI, GGC loaned it 18,697.7 Bitcoin (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\">BTC<\/a>) in June 2022 under an open loan agreement reached in 2019. The outstanding balance of the loan was converted in November to a fixed-term loan due on May 11, 2023. The loan was  partially repaid, and a balance of 4,550.5 BTC remained. <\/p>\n<figure><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The Genesis suit against DCG. Source: PACER<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>DCIG sent GGC a request on May 9 to convert the debt back into an open loan. GGC did not agree to that, but the balance was not paid. GGC is demanding the repayment of the loan with interest and late fees. <\/p>\n<p>The parties underwent mediation that ended in August but continue to negotiate, the complaint said. Those loans matured on May 11 and May 13, 2023. These loans, too, had been under mediation and are subject to continuing talks.<\/p>\n<p>The suits may not come to judgment, however. A DCG spokesperson told Cointelegraph in a statement, \u201cGenesis has agreed to stay the turnover action so that we can move forward with documenting the deal in principle that was reached with Genesis, the UCC, and DCG. We are documenting a forbearance agreement and expect to file it with the court shortly. At that point, we will initiate the distribution of funds and continue on the path to significant recovery for Genesis creditors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GGC declared bankruptcy in January. It had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/crypto-lender-genesis-lays-off-30-more-staff-report\">suspended withdrawals<\/a> and new loan activity in November and laid off staff in the runup to its bankruptcy filing. It <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/gemini-considers-forbearance-as-dcg-defaults-on-630-million-payment\">owes $3.5 billion<\/a> to its top 50 creditors. <\/p>\n<p>DCG <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/digital-currency-group-genesis-reaches-agreement-with-genesis\">reached an agreement in principle<\/a> with GCC unsecured creditors on Aug. 29 that would return 70-90% of the dollar equivalents owed, although the ad hoc creditors\u2019 committee and cryptocurrency exchange Gemini <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/genesis-lenders-call-dcg-agreement-wholly-insufficient\">did not support the agreement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Magazine: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/magazine\/deposit-risk-crypto-exchanges-money\/\">Deposit risk: What do crypto exchanges really do with your money?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"post-content__disclaimer\">This article was updated on Sept. 6 at 22:00 UTC to include a statement from DCG.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bankrupt cryptocurrency lender Genesis Global Capital (GGC) filed two suits on Sept. 6 seeking the repayment of overdue loans from affiliated companies.
