{"id":151582,"date":"2023-09-07T19:53:29","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T14:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/?p=151582"},"modified":"2023-09-07T19:53:29","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T14:23:29","slug":"crypto-whale-loses-24m-in-staked-ethereum-to-phishing-attack-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/crypto-whale-loses-24m-in-staked-ethereum-to-phishing-attack-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto whale loses $24M in staked Ethereum to phishing attack &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-v-398ae7b2=\"\">\n<p>A cryptocurrency whale has fallen victim to a massive phishing attack, losing millions of dollars in staked Ethereum on the liquid staking provider Rocket Pool.<\/p>\n<p>A large cryptocurrency investor lost the entire address balance of Lido Staked ETH (stETH) and Rocket Pool ETH (rETH) due to a phishing attack, the cryptocurrency security firm PeckShield <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeckShieldAlert\/status\/1699620018739466632?s=20\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The hack was completed in just two transactions, as one <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/tx\/0xcbe7b32e62c7d931a28f747bba3a0afa7da95169fcf380ac2f7d54f3a2f77913\">had<\/a> 9,579 stETH stolen and the other <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/tx\/0xb91d7b1440745aa07409be36666bc291ecc661e424b21b855698d488949b920f\">involved<\/a> 4,851 rETH.\u00a0At the time of the attack, which occurred on Sept. 6, the stolen amounts were worth $15.5 million in stETH and $8.5 million in rETH, a staggering $24 million combined.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The phisher transactions in the $24 million phishing hack. Source: X<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to PeckShield data, the phisher subsequently swapped the stolen assets for 13,785 Ether (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/ethereum-price\">ETH<\/a>) and 1.64 million Dai (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/dai-price-index\">DAI<\/a>) tokens.<\/p>\n<p>A significant portion of the DAI stash has already been transferred into the fully automatic cryptocurrency exchange FixedFloat, PeckShield reported.<\/p>\n<p>SlowMist\u2019s crypto tracking team MistTrack also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MistTrack_io\/status\/1699609475848765556?s=20\">reported<\/a> that the most of the remaining stolen funds were transferred to three addresses, including <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/address\/0x4f2f02ee2f86e9ee8e674c1e8b2837181d12f322\">0x4f2f02ee<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/address\/0x7023505ed4b696d174969aa318fbe47b98787e49\">0x7023505<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/address\/0x2abdc2ab2b7e46e0c6bb4e7c816ef64485f4f7ad\">0x2abdc2ab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/metamask-scam-government-websites-crypto-investors\"><strong><em>MetaMask scammers take over government websites to target crypto investors<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to data from the anti-scam source, Scam Sniffer, the victim <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realScamSniffer\/status\/1699605367829995578?s=20\">enabled<\/a> token approvals to the scammer by signing \u201cIncrease Allowance\u201d transactions.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-09\/1324cc0c-65cb-4e09-befa-2bd877252176.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cIncrease Allowance\u201d method on the phisher\u2019s transaction. Source: Etherscan<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Allowance or access permissions are a feature of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/erc-20-tokens-explained\">ERC-20 tokens<\/a> which <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/nl\/developers\/tutorials\/erc20-annotated-code\/\">enable<\/a> a third party to have the right to spend some tokens that belong to a different owner, using smart contracts. Some cryptocurrency observers have previously <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/brogna.medium.com\/token-allowance-dc553f7d38b3\">warned<\/a> against risks associated with approving ERC-20 allowances, noting that anonymous developers could deploy malicious smart contracts to scam users.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes soon after at least five Ethereum liquid staking providers imposed or started working to impose a self-limit rule in which they promise not to own more than 22% of the Ethereum staking market.
