Activity trended up after Braavos, a Starknet wallet provider, published and then quickly deleted an article last week revealing that Starknet\u2019s long-awaited STRK token will soon be available to the public.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Speedy social media users shared <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/defi_airdrops\/status\/1696375038587601170\">screenshots<\/a> showing a preview of Braavos\u2019 post, titled \u201cWhy STRK will be Different from Other Tokens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Starknet also ranked as a top five Ethereum protocol by burn rate over the past seven days, driving the permanent destruction of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ultrasound.money\/\">415 ETH<\/a>, according to Ultra Sound Money.<\/p>\n<h2>Layer 2 Race Heats Up<\/h2>\n<p>Starknet\u2019s rising activity comes as competition is heating up among Ethereum Layer 2s.<\/p>\n<p>While Arbitrum and Optimism dominated L2 activity in 2022, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/zksync-era-mainnet-live\">zkSync Era<\/a> launched the first-ever zkEVM \u2014 an Ethereum-compatible rollup secured by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/zero-knowledge-2023\">zero-knowledge proofs<\/a> \u2014 in March of this year, shortly followed by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/defi-daily-polygon-zkevm-launched\">Polygon zkEVM<\/a> that same month, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/linea-completes-public-mainnet-rollout\">Linea<\/a> from Consensys last month.<\/p>\n<p>zkSync Era has emerged as the most active L2 with 29.1M transactions processed in the past 30 days, closely rivaling Ethereum mainnet, which processed 30.6M over the same period. Era also ranks as the third-largest L2 with a total value locked (TVL) of $389M.<\/p>\n<p>Base, the OP Stack-based Layer 2 from Coinbase, ranks fourth by TVL with $383M just one month after completing its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/base-opens-mainnet-to-all-users\">general access<\/a> launch. Base also briefly overtook Era by throughput two weeks ago amid the initial frenzy surrounding social trading app <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/friend-tech-closes-in-on-ethereum-with-usd1-7m-in-daily-fees\">Friend Tech<\/a>, posting a record high of nearly 16 TPS on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n<p>Although Base\u2019s throughput has trended around 4 TPS over the past week, when coupled with its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/optimism-deploys-bedrock-upgrade\">Superchain<\/a> sister network, Optimism, the two chains would rank second among L2s.<\/p>\n<p>However, Arbitrum and Optimism still make up 80% of Layer 2 TVL with $5.2B and $2.5B respectively.<\/p>\n<h2>Starknet Embraces Open Source<\/h2>\n<p>On Sept. 6, Starknet announced that its entire tech stack is now open-source after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Starknet\/status\/1699040532066906540\">shipping<\/a> version 0.12.2 to mainnet a day earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Starknet open-sourced its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Starknet\/status\/1697504345485381652\">prover<\/a>, the network\u2019s core engine, on Sept. 1. The move appeared to be further evidence that a Starknet token could be imminent, with a February <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.starknet.io\/en\/posts\/developers\/opensourcing-the-starknet-prover\">blog post<\/a> from the team stating its prover would be open-sourced \u201cright before Starknet will be ready for full decentralization.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starknet is becoming a major contender within Ethereum\u2019s Layer 2 ecosystem, consistently ranking as the second most active L2 by transaction volume this week.
