Coinbase looks to acquire more licenses and bolster operations in various global markets as its legal battle in the US with the Securities and Exchange Commission trudges on.<\/p>\n
The publicly traded crypto exchange labeled Europe, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and Australia as \u201cnear-term priority markets,\u201d in a Thursday blog post.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It is in the final stages choosing the location of its \u201cMiCA hub,\u201d the company notes \u2014 a reference to the European Union\u2019s Markets in Crypto Assets regulation passed in April<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The efforts are part of the second phase of Coinbase\u2019s so-called Go Broad, Go Deep strategy first revealed<\/a> in May 2022. They continue amid the company\u2019s back-and-forth with an SEC that sued it for allegedly operating as an unregistered exchange<\/a> \u2014 charges the company has denied.\u00a0<\/p>\n Of G20<\/a> countries and other \u201cmajor financial hubs,\u201d 83% have made progress toward regulatory clarity for crypto, Coinbase executives Nana Murugesan, Tom Duff Gordon wrote in the Thursday post<\/a>. The US is not among them.<\/p>\n \u201cCoinbase is a public company in the US because we believe the US would best be served by embracing this fundamental innovation,\u201d they added. \u201cHowever, we\u2019re committed to helping to update the global financial system and providing more economic freedom and opportunity, and won\u2019t stand idle just because the US is.\u201d<\/p>\n The company also seeks support from \u201cforward-looking regulators\u201d to expand products \u2014 such as its derivatives offering launched in Bermuda<\/a> in May, and its Web3 wallet<\/a> \u2014 to different geographies.<\/p>\n Coinbase executives told Blockworks last month it intends to become \u201csuper active\u201d in Canada<\/a>.
