{"id":156076,"date":"2023-09-15T00:28:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T18:58:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/?p=156076"},"modified":"2023-09-15T00:28:43","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T18:58:43","slug":"genesis-announces-winding-down-of-crypto-trading-services-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/genesis-announces-winding-down-of-crypto-trading-services-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Genesis announces winding down of crypto trading services &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-v-281e09ba=\"\">\n<p>Crypto lending firm Genesis, a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group (DCG), will stop offering spot and derivatives trading for crypto assets through its British Virgin Islands unit.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Sept. 14 statement from a Genesis spokesperson, the firm will \u201cvoluntarily and for business reasons\u201d wind down its digital asset trading services through all of its entities. Genesis had been offering trading services through its GGC International arm in the British Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n<p>The move followed Genesis Global Trading \u2014 a firm also affiliated with DCG but not subject to the same bankruptcy proceedings as Genesis Global Capital \u2014 announcing in January it would <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/us-based-genesis-global-trading-will-eliminate-crypto-spot-trading-service\">eliminate its crypto spot trading services<\/a> under similar circumstances \u2014 i.e. \u201cvoluntarily and for business reasons\u201d. GGC International had still been offering spot and derivatives trading at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis Global Capital halted withdrawals in November 2022, citing \u201cunprecedented market turmoil\u201d at the time. Reports from January <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/crypto-lender-genesis-lays-off-30-more-staff-report\">suggested the firm<\/a> could have laid off as much as 30% of its staff before it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York. The SEC charged both cryptocurrency exchange Gemini and Genesis for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/gemini-and-genesis-charged-by-sec-over-unregistered-securities\">offering unregistered securities<\/a> through Gemini&#8217;s Earn program.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/gemini-earn-users-recover-all-funds-dcg-remuneration?ref=biztoc.com\"><strong><em>Gemini Earn users could recover all funds in new DCG remuneration scheme<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bankruptcy, legal, and regulatory entanglements between the various DCG subsidiaries and crypto firms \u2014 DCG is also the parent company of Grayscale Investments \u2014 have made waves in the space in the last year. Genesis blamed its collapse on Three Arrows Capital and reported it had suffered losses following the failure of crypto exchange FTX.<\/p>\n<p>In August, DCG <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/digital-currency-group-genesis-reaches-agreement-with-genesis\">announced it had reached<\/a> an \u201cagreement in principle\u201d with Genesis allowing creditors to recover the majority of their funds.
