Some museum staff felt assured that the French people\u2019s commitment to cultural enlightenment would prevail, and museum attendance would soon return to pre-pandemic levels. But the doors were open\u2014and huge crowds hadn\u2019t turned up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cFrench people came less, young people came less,\u201d Guillaume Roux, the Orsay\u2019s director of development, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt\u2019s<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">SCENE<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. \u201cWe realized that we would have to fight to gain back visitors we had lost.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In October 2021, the museum gained a new president, Christophe Leribault, whose top priority immediately became opening the Orsay to the masses\u2014in Roux\u2019s words, \u201ctalking to everyone, even those who had never been to the museum or might never come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Leribault tasked an internal team with exploring <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/non-fungible-tokens-nfts-explained-guide-learn-blockchain\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">NFTs<\/a> and blockchain; the novel technology was sparking conversations across the art world, and the museum director wanted to find a way to harness it to attract new and younger audiences to the Orsay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Nearly two years later, the fruits of that exploration have materialized: On Friday, the museum announced a year-long partnership with the Tezos Foundation to bring blockchain-backed artworks and on-chain digital artists into conversation with the museum\u2019s collections and exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">To kick off the partnership, the museum will offer on-chain digital souvenirs to visitors of its upcoming exhibition, \u201cVan Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise: The Final Months,\u201d which opens on October 3 and will explore works created by the renowned Dutch painter in the last two months of his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Starting next Tuesday, museum patrons and online collectors will be able to purchase two digital souvenirs affiliated with the exhibition: one, an augmented reality work depicting van Gogh\u2019s final palette, the other, an original digital artwork inspired by van Gogh and crafted by <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.keruproject.org\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">KERU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, a French blockchain culture project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Both pieces will be minted on the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/tezos\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Tezos blockchain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, and will feature gamified elements offering holders the ability to win prizes including lifetime passes to the Orsay, and invitations to opening galas at the museum. Further, the museum plans to, beginning in early 2024, invite a number of digital artists who work on the blockchain to create NFT collections inspired by art pieces in the Orsay\u2019s permanent collection.
