During the period, <em>CryptoSlate<\/em> reported notable hacks of different crypto projects, including the $200 million hack of Mixin Network, the $73 million <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/curve-finance-tvl-halved-following-vyper-vulnerability-exploit\/\">exploit<\/a> of Curve Finance, and the $8 million HTX <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/justin-sun-confirms-8-htx-exploit-attacker-offered-5-bounty-and-a-security-advisor-role-to-return-funds\/\">lost<\/a> to a hot wallet compromise.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_361410\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361410\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-361410 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/F7AXlOTaQAAV58L-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Crypto hacks\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1075\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-361410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Beosin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This marks a significant upsurge compared to the cumulative losses of the first half of the year, totaling $330 million during the first quarter and a slight increase to $333 million by the year\u2019s second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beosin.com\/resources\/q3-2023-global-web3-security-report?lang=en-US\">report<\/a> was published in collaboration with other members of the blockchain alliance, including Footprint Analytics and SUSS NiFT.<\/p>\n<h2>Malicious players keep targeting DeFi projects.<\/h2>\n<p>Beosin revealed that decentralized finance (DeFi) projects suffered the most hacks during the period, with around 67% of the breaches targeting platforms in the sector. However, it\u2019s essential to note that other sectors, such as blockchains, payment platforms, exchanges, casinos, and infrastructure, also suffered hacking incidents during the period.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_361412\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361412\" style=\"width: 1108px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-361412\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Screenshot-2023-09-29-135703.jpg\" alt=\"DeFi hacks\" width=\"1108\" height=\"649\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload size-full wp-image-361412\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Screenshot-2023-09-29-135703.jpg\" alt=\"DeFi hacks\" width=\"1108\" height=\"649\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1108px) 100vw, 1108px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-361412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Beosin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite malicious players\u2019 penchant for targeting DeFi projects, public blockchains recorded the highest monetary loss because of the $200 million breach of Mixin Network. This single <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/mixin-network-loses-200m-in-attack-of-its-cloud-provider\/\">breach<\/a> accounts for 37% of the total losses for the quarter and is the most significant crypto loss of this year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_361413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361413\" style=\"width: 1057px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-361413\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Screenshot-2023-09-29-135914.jpg\" alt=\"Ethereum hacks\" width=\"1057\" height=\"483\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload size-full wp-image-361413\" src=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Screenshot-2023-09-29-135914.jpg\" alt=\"Ethereum hacks\" width=\"1057\" height=\"483\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1057px) 100vw, 1057px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-361413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Beosin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, Beosin wrote that the Ethereum blockchain suffered the most losses and incidents during the period. It said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cRanked by number of attacks, the top 5 chains with the most security incidents were: Ethereum (16 times), BNB Chain (10 times), Arbitrum (3 times), BTC (2 times), and Base (2 times).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Most exploits were preventable<\/h2>\n<p>Interestingly, nearly half of the attacked projects (46.5%) had not undergone any security audits.
