Starfield, Skyrim developer Bethesda\u2019s latest release, became the top best-selling premium game in dollar sales since its release on September 6.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Circana <\/span>data<\/span><\/a>, Starfield was the top paid game last month, beating out Warner Bros. Games\u2019 Mortal Kombat 1, EA Sports FC 24, and Madden NFL 24. At time of writing, <\/span>Starfield<\/span><\/a> is also the <\/span>seventh<\/span><\/a> best-selling premium game of the year, selling more copies than Bandai Namco\u2019s Elden Ring and <\/span>Square Enix<\/span><\/a>\u2019s Final Fantasy XVI, to name a few.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft, which owns Xbox and Bethesda, confirmed that Starfield\u2019s release was great for its business, spiking the number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers. In its <\/span>quarterly earnings call<\/span><\/a> Tuesday, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said that Microsoft\u2019s gaming division saw a 9% spike in revenue\u2014primarily due to Starfield\u2019s release and a concurrent jump in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions (Starfield is included in Game Pass).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMore than 11 million people have played the game to date,\u201d Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared of Starfield during the earnings call.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cNearly half of hours played have been on PC, and on launch day, we set a record for the most Game Pass subscriptions added on a single day ever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Within those 11 million players, Starfield saw a substantial 6 million of that number within its first day. The Starfield team shared on <\/span>Twitter<\/span><\/a> that Starfield became Bethesda\u2019s <\/span>biggest game launch<\/span><\/a> of all time within 24 hours of launch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering Bethesda is also behind well-known games like Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it\u2019s an especially notable achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bruce Nesmith, a former Bethesda game designer who worked on Skyrim and Starfield\u2019s early development, told <\/span>MinnMax<\/span><\/a> in an interview this week that he\u2019s \u201cpleased as punch\u201d by the audience reaction to the game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a new IP, it was actually far more challenging than doing Skyrim, or the Fallouts,\u201d Nesmith said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much new stuff you have to create for new IP. So the hurdles are higher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Starfield is only available on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. The game peaked at over 330,000 concurrent players on Steam during its early-access period, according to Steamdb <\/span>data<\/span><\/a>, then saw one million players online<\/a> on launch day. Starfield<\/span>\u00a0has around 37,000 concurrent active players at time of writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The game has already broken into Steam\u2019s top 100 bestselling games and currently sits in 55th place, with roughly 68% of Steam reviews showing a positive score. Starfield has also maintained something of an audience on livestreaming site Twitch, with around <\/span>1,300 concurrent viewers<\/span><\/a> watching streamers play the title.<\/span><\/p>\n

While some players spend hours exploring space and completing <\/span>can\u2019t-miss quests in Starfield<\/span><\/a>, others are releasing mods for the title like this <\/span>Thomas the Tank Engine<\/span><\/a> mod, which is sure to inspire laughter\u2014or fear\u2014in the hearts of even the most seasoned gamers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
