{"id":183805,"date":"2023-10-30T21:37:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T16:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/?p=183805"},"modified":"2023-10-30T21:37:07","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T16:07:07","slug":"hkma-wraps-up-phase-one-of-cbdc-trial-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/hkma-wraps-up-phase-one-of-cbdc-trial-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"HKMA wraps up phase one of CBDC trial &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Hong Kong wrapped up the first phase of its CBDC pilot according to a report on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s still unclear if Hong Kong will seek to introduce e-HKD, the retail version of its CBDC.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the uncertainty, the project highlighted potentially \u201cunique\u201d areas including atomic settlement, tokenization and programmability.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The project <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hkma.gov.hk\/eng\/news-and-media\/press-releases\/2023\/10\/20231030-3\/\">found<\/a> that the programmability of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/tag\/cbdc\">CBDC<\/a> may be able to \u201cimprove customer protections and promote trust\u201d between businesses and consumers through smart contracts.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201cretail escrow product\u201d was floated and tested by the China Construction Bank Asia and Hong Kong\u2019s Bank of China. Essentially, consumers could put a prepayment in escrow for a good or service, and the funds would be distributed automatically upon completion of the service. CCB ran a similar test on subscription models, though it included a \u201crefund mechanism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/tag\/tokenization\">tokenization<\/a>, not only could banks introduce tokenized deposits, basically the CBDC version of bank deposits, but there are benefits for retail users as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen applied appropriately, tokenisation could enable asset owners to access marketplaces with increased liquidity, efficiency and transparency compared to conventional marketplaces,\u201d the project <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hkma.gov.hk\/media\/eng\/doc\/key-information\/press-release\/2023\/20231030e3a1.pdf\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Atomic settlements allow for immediate transfer and settlement of assets. Whilst new technologies can facilitate the development of faster, more efficient processes, there is a crucial need for business stakeholders and intermediaries to review and align their processes and operational norms,\u201d the Hong Kong Monetary Authority wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The project tested using distributed ledger technology, while also weighing \u201cnon-DLT based designs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It has yet to settle on one specifically, noting that it could both utilize a DLT or build a design without one.
