Others, like Hayden Hughes, co-founder of social-trading platform Alpha Impact, who spoke to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/bitcoin-faces-reality-check-etf-061528095.html\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">have posited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> that the approval of a Bitcoin ETF has already been priced in, meaning there\u2019s a low chance the price will sustain any massive gains. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">But even if the market cap and price of Bitcoin does go through the roof and the entire crypto industry thrives, will it be a good thing? Privacy-focused Bitcoiners have even said that such a product goes against everything that Bitcoin stands for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Experts like those at Nym Technologies and Wasabi Wallet previously <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/150762\/wall-street-institutional-mainstream-interest\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">told<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">that Wall Street interest in the cryptocurrency could lead governments to strongarm crypto users into restriction, penalties, or taxes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The reasoning is that lawmakers are already cracking down on the crypto industry and are increasingly focused on anti-money laundering (AML) procedures\u2014as seen with major crypto brands like Coinbase and Binance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Others have argued that with Wall Street titans barging in on the market, the cryptocurrency will become more centralized and correlated with traditional stocks. Bitcoiners have been waiting and hoping for years that the coin would <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/203287\/stocks-are-down-bitcoin-is-way-up-will-this-time-be-different\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">decouple from securities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Bob Bodily, CEO of Ordinals marketplace Bioniq, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">that a Bitcoin ETF could ruin Bitcoin\u2019s original censorship resistant promise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThe worry with a Bitcoin ETF is that we\u2019ll have so much Bitcoin locked up in ETFs that now we have compromised the original vision for Bitcoin where we have tons of Bitcoin in ETFs that are highly correlated to stocks, behave like stocks, people buy and sell them like stocks and in the large majority of cases we\u2019re going to have central custodian ownership,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Bodily was referring to Bitcoin\u2019s quality of allowing anyone to use the network and make transactions\u2014without getting shut down by a government or authority. The idea is that anyone who can download Bitcoin wallet software, run a node, and complete transactions can do so without being stopped. And typically it\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/37366\/can-a-country-actually-ban-bitcoin\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">hard to stop that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">But if Bitcoin ETFs on Wall Street and centralized custodians become the norm\u2014and perhaps the only known way\u2014for people to get exposure to Bitcoin, users could eventually get banned from the network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cAs long as you can self-custody, then you can be a unique, individual participant in the Bitcoin network,\u201d added Bodily. \u201cIf Bitcoin ETFs become the only legal way to access Bitcoin, and self-custody is illegal (like Gold was back in the 70s), then this would compromise Bitcoin\u2019s core value proposition because people couldn\u2019t legally self-custody their assets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Craig Raw, developer of the Bitcoin Sparrow Wallet, added that privacy and profits don\u2019t always go hand-in-hand. While the cypherpunks, advocates who want social change via cryptographic tools, want people to have private interactions. Such tools already exist in the Bitcoin and wider crypto world. There are apps, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/29932\/bitcoin-mixers-private-using-coinjoin\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">like CoinJoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, which people use to obfuscate Bitcoin transactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">There are already tensions between privacy advocates in the crypto world and authorities: feds last year <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/106986\/treasury-blacklists-bans-tornado-cash-ethereum-mixer\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">banned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> U.S. citizens from using the Tornado Cash app, a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-are-coin-mixers-tornado-cash-how-do-they-work\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u2018coin mixer\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> which allows users make private transactions on the Ethereum network; America\u2019s biggest crypto exchange Coinbase then <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/142360\/government-sanctions-tornado-cash-dont-fit-law-coinbase-chief-legal-officer\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">slammed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> the government\u2019s reasoning for doing so and has <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/109267\/coinbase-backs-tornado-cash-lawsuit-against-u-s-treasury\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">since funded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> a lawsuit against the Treasury department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The idea that traditional finance entering the crypto world isn\u2019t necessarily good is not a new one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Custodia Bank CEO Caitlin Long <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/caitlinlong\/2018\/07\/31\/is-financialization-a-double-edged-sword-for-bitcoin-and-cryptocurrencies\/?sh=279e91152a20\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> back in 2018 that while such a product could be good for the industry, the financialization of the crypto world could be bad if it leads to too much liquidity from leveraged traders wanting quick, short-term gains entering the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">This in turn could push long-term HOLDers to \u201cresist it simply by keeping their coins away from the financial system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Analysts right now say that\u2014for better or worse\u2014it\u2019s now just a matter of time before a Bitcoin ETF hits Wall Street. JP Morgan has even said it could happen <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/202416\/bitcoin-etf-could-be-approved-in-time-for-christmas-says-jp-morgan\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">before Christmas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.
