More impressive: It\u2019s up nearly 80% in the past 30 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">On the face of it, analysts say we\u2019re seeing a classic short squeeze. But driving that is a narrative that basically says that <span class=\"link\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-solana-a-scalable-decentralized-network-for-dapps\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">Solana<\/a><\/span> is not only as good as <span class=\"link\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-ethereum-quickly-explained-four-minute-guide\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">Ethereum<\/a><\/span>\u2014it promises to replace it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">For the longest time, SOL holders were derided as \u201cSoylana Manlets.\u201d The network was especially hard hit by the FTX debacle because FTX and Solana were heavily invested in each other. FTX invested in both Solana and projects built on top of it. For example, together with the Solana Foundation, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/116652\/ftx-solana-defi-serum-starting-over\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">FTX co-created Serum<\/a>, a now defunct <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=25908\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span class=\"sc-4095e4f9-4 bBrSlx\">DeFi<\/span><\/a> protocol which, in its heyday, was the backbone of the Solana DeFi ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Solana Foundation also holds several million dollars worth of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/114626\/solana-foundation-ftx-sbf-financial-ties\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">FTX common stock and FTT tokens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. This means that when FTX went down, Solana suffered both from the size of its treasury shrinking, as well as the fact that the SOL that FTX held has now been passed on to liquidators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">But thanks to growing developer support\u2014its developer base <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.developerreport.com\/developer-report\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">grew over 40% year over year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u2014 and a growing cadre of Solana true believers refused to die. These days, the Solana vs Ethereum debate has become one of the loudest conversations on Crypto X\/Crypto Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In essence, Solana\u2019s advocates say the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5733\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span class=\"sc-4095e4f9-4 bBrSlx\">proof-of-stake<\/span><\/a> blockchain\u2019s novel technology is faster, more scalable, and cheaper to use than the Ethereum <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5712\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span class=\"sc-4095e4f9-4 bBrSlx\">blockchain<\/span><\/a>. (<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-solana-a-scalable-decentralized-network-for-dapps\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Here\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> a fuller explanation of the network\u2019s underpinnings vis a vis Ethereum\u2019s.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-2ed2039d-2 hmmXcn gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #dfe2e4\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">ETH\/BTC vs SOL\/BTC<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><span class=\"link\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-bitcoin-four-minute-instant-guide-explainer\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\">Bitcoin<\/a><\/span> is the market leader in crypto, and because of that, traders often examine the price of coins against the value of BTC, instead of against the value of the dollar\u2014the reasoning being that, if you can\u2019t outperform BTC, you might as well leave your money in BTC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Lately, the price action on SOL\/BTC has been far more attractive than that of ETH\/BTC. This came after ETH experienced its first bear cycle\u2014a time during which many people made claims that ETH would disappear much like most of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5693\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span class=\"sc-4095e4f9-4 bBrSlx\">ICOs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of its time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">They were wrong. Developers flocked to ETH to launch tokens and protocols, keeping attention and volume on it throughout the bear. ETH came back stronger than ever and was one of the top performers of the 2020-2021 bull market.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Now, Solana is seeing a similar narrative. It had very close ties to FTX, so after the exchange\u2019s collapse, many believed that Solana would never recover. Its showcase NFT project, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/121969\/why-degods-y00ts-leaving-solana-how-nft-migration-works\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">DeGods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, even left Solana for the Ethereum network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Yet despite this, developers continued to build and deploy products on Solana\u2014and its resilience caught the attention of investors as a potential short squeeze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cAll the ingredients were there for a huge rip higher,\u201d explained Patrick Felder, founder &amp; CIO at Prismatic Capital, who mostly invests in ETH but has increasingly been putting money into SOL.\u00a0 \u201cAfter the FTX liquidators released their timeline for selling assets, everyone was either actively shorting SOL, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">talking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> about shorting SOL.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">All those shorts created an imbalance that\u2019s being exploited by the SOL true believers, he said. \u201cIn terms of positioning, things got way offsides, way too quickly. Solana has a diehard community so there are many people accumulating for the next cycle. It\u2019s a classic short squeeze setup.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-a2026f0f-3 kSJGyr gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Solana developer community\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Especially critical to Solana\u2019s resistance to the short sellers is its ardent developer community, which not only didn\u2019t defect post-FTX, it grew. The number of developers on Solana actually <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rockawayx.com\/comms\/solana-in-numbers\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">surged by 83%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, at least according to RockwayX, a European VC firm that invested in Solana. Even Ethereum-cofounder Vitalik Buterin publicly showed support for the developer community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"relative w-full\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet mx-auto\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Some smart people tell me there is an earnest smart developer community in Solana, and now that the awful opportunistic money people have been washed out, the chain has a bright future.<\/p>\n<p>Hard for me to tell from outside, but I hope the community gets its fair chance to thrive\ud83e\uddbe\ud83e\uddbe<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/1608591727316684804?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">December 29, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The number of developers working on a layer-1 blockchain is a critical metric. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In crypto you don&#8217;t pay developers to build on your blockchain, they have to choose to do it\u2014and take a risk by learning a blockchain-specific language when they don&#8217;t know if the blockchain itself will last.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">According to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.developerreport.com\/\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Electric Capitals Developer Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, Solana currently has nearly 1,000 full time developers; by contrast, Ethereum has nearly 6,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Likewise, Solana\u2019s market cap is only 8% of Ethereum\u2019s market cap, so it has a considerable way to go to make a more durable argument for its long-term success. And despite the short squeeze, it\u2019s not out of the FTX woods yet. It still needs to deal with the liquidation of FTX\u2019s assets.
