{"id":203602,"date":"2023-11-30T15:36:39","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T10:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/?p=203602"},"modified":"2023-11-30T15:36:39","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T10:06:39","slug":"treasury-sanctions-crypto-mixer-sinbad-after-money-laundering-accusations-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/treasury-sanctions-crypto-mixer-sinbad-after-money-laundering-accusations-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Treasury sanctions crypto mixer Sinbad after money laundering accusations &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The US Department of the Treasury has sanctioned a cryptocurrency mixing service the government claims is a key money-laundering tool for the Lazarus Group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSinbad has processed millions of dollars\u2019 worth of virtual currency from Lazarus Group heists, including the Horizon Bridge and Axie Infinity heists,\u201d the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), the Treasury\u2019s department that oversees sanctions, said in a statement Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sinbad.io, a cryptocurrency mixing service created by an anonymous founder, became a favorite for North Korean-state sponsored hacking organization Lazarus in 2022, researchers from analytics firm Chainalysis said in its last <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/2022-biggest-year-ever-for-crypto-hacking\/\">annual report<\/a>. Researchers from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/blog\/analysis\/over-1-billion-stolen-from-bridges-so-far-in-2022-as-harmony-s-horizon-bridge-becomes-latest-victim-in-100-million-hack\/hss_channeltw-1344645140\">Elliptic<\/a> agreed, saying in February they believed Sinbad is simply a relaunched version of Blender, the mixer OFAC blacklisted in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of Wednesday, the US government had seized Sinbad\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMixing services that enable criminal actors, such as the Lazarus Group, to launder stolen assets will face serious consequences,\u201d Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said in a statement Wednesday. \u201cThe Treasury Department and its US government partners stand ready to deploy all tools at their disposal to prevent virtual currency mixers, like Sinbad, from facilitating illicit activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/news\/stake-hack-lazarus-group-north-korea-fbi\">FBI blames North Korea\u2019s Lazarus Group for $40M Stake hack<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lazarus Group was added to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/tag\/ofac\">OFAC\u2019s<\/a> sanction list in September 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sinbad was used to launder a significant portion of the $100 million worth of crypto Lazarus stole in June 2023 from customers of Atomic Wallet, OFAC said. Lazarus also used the mixer \u201cto launder a significant portion\u201d of crypto stolen in the $620 million Axie Infinity heist, the office alleges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSinbad is also used by cybercriminals to obfuscate transactions linked to malign activities such as sanctions evasion, drug trafficking, the purchase of child sexual abuse materials, and additional illicit sales on darknet marketplaces,\u201d OFAC added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as cryptocurrency advocacy groups <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/news\/tornado-cash-fans-appeal\">continue to fight OFAC in the courts<\/a> over the agency\u2019s sanctions against Tornado Cash \u2014 a mixing service <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0916\">sanctioned<\/a> in August 2022 for its alleged role in helping Lazarus launder more than $455 million in stolen funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plaintiffs in two cases are bringing their battle against the Treasury to federal appellate courts. Joseph Van Loon, along with five other self-identified \u201cEthereum blockchain users\u201d sued the US Treasury Department, Secretary Janet Yellen, the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) and OFAC Director Andrea Gacki in September 2022. A federal judge in Texas <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/news\/judge-backs-us-treasury-tornado-cash-sanction\">sided with the federal government<\/a> in August, rejecting the argument that OFAC was acting outside its jurisdiction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coin Center, Bankless co-founder David Hoffman and others <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockworks.co\/news\/coin-center-sues-over-treasurys-tornado-cash-sanctions\">filed a lawsuit against the same federal parties<\/a> in October 2022.
