After weeks of jubilance over the Solana ecosystem\u2019s resounding comeback\u2014one that boosted <\/span>SOL<\/span><\/a>, Solana <\/span>NFTs<\/span><\/a>, Solana <\/span>meme coins<\/span><\/a>, and even the lackluster Solana <\/span>smartphone<\/span><\/a>\u2014the momentum began to cool this week, triggering intensified exchanges between advocates of the blockchain and those of its dominant rival, Ethereum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin <\/span>bemoaned<\/span><\/a> the <\/span>dying Web3 vision<\/span><\/a> that originally spurred much crypto development, blaming stalled progress on the exorbitant cost of gas fees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko was quick to add his voice to the discourse, dismissing Ethereum as a \u201ccockroach settlement layer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The tension was likely heightened by the declining fortunes of key Solana winners of recent weeks, most notably the <\/span>once-unstoppable<\/span><\/a> dog-themed meme coin BONK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And just in time, native tokens of Ethereum layer-2 networks such as Optimism and Arbitrum shot up over 30% and 16%, respectively\u2014likely due to those blockchain\u2019s lower gas fees.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon, animosity between ascendant Ethereum maximalists and defensive Solana advocates came to define almost every corner of Twitter discourse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even seemingly unrelated news events got sucked into the fray. When news broke earlier in the week that Donald Trump had <\/span>started offloading<\/span><\/a> millions of dollars worth of ETH from his struggling NFT projects, Twitter users were quick to view the news as some sort of referendum on the never-ending Ethereum\/Solana fracas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
