Airdrop season <\/span>is in full swing<\/span><\/a>, with apps, protocols, and other projects seizing upon signs of an impending bear market to finally drop their tokens\u2014and potentially reward millions of crypto users in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n

What exactly is an <\/span>airdrop<\/span><\/a>, though? When it comes to crypto tokens, an airdrop is typically a way for a project to reward its early users and contributors by giving them a share of a newly launched token, all while spreading the tokens far and wide for decentralized governance.<\/span><\/p>\n

When it comes to blockchain networks and tokens primed specifically for gaming, there are some pretty compelling airdrops on the horizon in the months ahead. Here\u2019s a look at what\u2019s coming for gamers\u2014there may still be time to get involved and score some tokens ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Portal<\/b><\/h2>\n

Portal is undoubtedly one of the <\/span>buzziest airdrops on the horizon<\/span><\/a>, though it has also been controversial. The multi-chain gaming token, designed to bridge the gap between <\/span>Web3<\/span><\/a> games across various blockchains, has incentivized crypto users to earn credit towards the airdrop by creating, sharing, and interacting with Twitter content\u2014which they\u2019ve done en masse.<\/span><\/p>\n

As obnoxious as that can be, there\u2019s still a lot of hype around what Portal is building. Much of the team comes from the <\/span>Overlord<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Creepz NFT<\/span><\/a> team at SuperDuper, they\u2019ve <\/span>recruited a Rockstar Games co-founder<\/span><\/a> and other advisors, and have lined up allies like major talent agency WME and NFT marketplace Magic Eden.<\/span><\/p>\n

Portal says the airdrop is <\/span>coming in January 2024<\/span><\/a> following a recent presale period and the launch of the latest version of its <\/span>Crystal Dash airdrop farming<\/span><\/a> experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Xai<\/b><\/h2>\n

Xai is a <\/span>\u201clayer-3\u201d gaming network<\/span><\/a> built on <\/span>Arbitrum<\/span><\/a>, itself a layer-2 <\/span>Ethereum<\/span><\/a> scaling network, and it\u2019s set to launch its first airdrop wave in the coming days. The drop was <\/span>originally planned<\/span><\/a> for December 27, but was <\/span>delayed a week<\/span><\/a> into early January.<\/span><\/p>\n

Created in collaboration with Arbitrum developer Offchain Labs, the Xai network will drop its first XAI tokens to owners of certain NFT projects, along with Sentry node operators that have purchased a Sentry Key. <\/span>Click here<\/span><\/a> for more on who\u2019s eligible for the XAI airdrop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saga Protocol<\/b><\/h2>\n

Saga is a <\/span>new blockchain network<\/span><\/a> designed primarily for gaming, so it makes sense that the way to potentially earn a share of the upcoming airdrop is by playing games. In December, Saga launched <\/span>a \u201cplay-to-airdrop\u201d campaign<\/span><\/a> across several games running on testnet, with the top leaderboard finishers set to earn a share of SAGA tokens.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, Saga CEO Rebecca Liao told <\/span>Decrypt<\/span><\/i>\u2019s GG that some players might ultimately earn \u201cdouble airdrops,\u201d since games may also launch their own tokens and award them to early users. The Saga mainnet is set to go live in spring 2024, with more competitions set to take place in the coming months\u2014and possibly in games on other chains too, Liao teased.<\/span><\/p>\n
