Ethereum used to have proof of work consensus, but switched to proof of stake in September 2022 and no longer requires miners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The survey, to launch next week, will require identified commercial crypto miners to respond with details of their energy use; the EIA will also seek public comment on the collection of crypto miners&#8217; energy use data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The survey follows an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reginfo.gov\/public\/do\/PRAViewICR?ref_nbr=202401-1905-002\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 iLQIVg\">&#8220;emergency collection of data request&#8221;<\/a> by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), part of the Executive Office of the President of the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cWe intend to continue to analyze and write about the energy implications of cryptocurrency mining activities in the United States,\u201d said EIA Administrator Joe DeCarolis in a statement, adding that the agency would focus on the &#8220;evolving&#8221; energy demand for crypto mining, identifying geographic areas of growth and the sources of electricity used for crypto mining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EIAgov\/status\/1752740768651866455\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 iLQIVg\">tweet<\/a>, the EIA said that it was conducting the survey in order to &#8220;better understand&#8221;
