Talk to\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thewaltdisneycompany.com\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Walt Disney Co<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. and the answer is \u201cwe\u2019re out,\u201d at least for now. News broke on Tues. (March 28) that there will be no Mouse in the metaverse for the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Wall Street Journal reported that \u201cWalt Disney Co. has eliminated its next-generation storytelling and consumer-experiences unit, the small division that was developing metaverse strategies, according to people familiar with the situation, as part of a broader restructuring that is expected to reduce headcount by around 7,000 across the company over the next two months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Microsoft<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is also scaling back its commercial metaverse plans, shifting to an \u201cindustrial metaverse\u201d footing with chip maker Nvidia on its\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/omniverse\/cloud\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">NVIDIA Omniverse\u2122 Cloud<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a03D design platform that\u2019s already in use by automakers including BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Meanwhile, WSJ said on Wednesday (March 29) that \u201cSmaller companies such as Decentraland and the Sandbox where users have been able to buy virtual land and build their own worlds have seen some of the most success so far. But even so, land sales are down. The median price per square meter in Decentraland has dropped from about $45 a year ago to $5, according to data from WeMeta, the firm that tracks the sales.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Even Chinese tech titans\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tencent.com\/en-us\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tencent<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bytedance.com\/en\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bytedance<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0have dialed down their meta-aspirations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bitcoin.com\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/chinese-tech-giants-tencent-and-bytedance-plan-cuts-in-their-metaverse-divisions\/#:~:text=Tencent%20and%20Bytedance%20Reportedly%20Shedding,groups%20according%20to%20various%20reports.\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">reported<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0last month that \u201cTencent and Bytedance, two of the biggest Chinese tech companies, are planning to execute hundreds of layoffs in their metaverse development groups according to various reports. Tencent, which is most known for its software business, is currently abandoning its plans to get into the metaverse hardware market, affecting hundreds of employees at the company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Read<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">:\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/metaverse\/2023\/how-facebook-turned-the-metaverse-into-a-buzzword\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">How Facebook Turned the Metaverse Into a Buzzword<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Goggles Optional In the Connected Economy<\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Much of the metaverse maligning derives from wearing giant augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) goggles that are expensive, unwieldy, and, frankly, weird people out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Perhaps more comes from consumers rejecting life in immersive virtual worlds for the handy and entertaining connected digital economy we\u2019re already living in \u2014 no goggles are required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In her meta-take on the imbroglio, PYMNTS\u2019 Karen Webster\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/metaverse\/2023\/how-facebook-turned-the-metaverse-into-a-buzzword\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on Monday (March 27) that \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/connectedeconomy\/2022\/how-to-catch-the-next-wave-of-digital-transformation\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the app economy that emerged<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0over the decade of the 2010s inspired innovators to create the infrastructure and the apps for the consumer-driven version of the\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/connectedeconomy\/2022\/what-2014-teaches-us-about-the-future-of-payments-and-the-digital-economy\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">convergence of the digital and physical worlds<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Still, she, like Disney, Microsoft and Tencent, doesn\u2019t see humans abandoning IRL to spend their days wearing goggles to live in worlds of make-believe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Not everyone is down on the concept, however. Gamers spend a lot of time and money in metaverse-like gaming experiences \u2014 most of them not requiring headgear.
