A US judge has sentenced disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to 25 years in prison after the former crypto tycoon was convicted of fraud charges last year.<\/p>\n
District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan also sentenced<\/a> Bankman-Fried to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $11 billion in forfeiture.<\/p>\n FTX imploded and filed for bankruptcy in November 2022 amid accusations that Bankman-Fried mishandled the exchange\u2019s funds by loaning out billions of dollars worth of customer deposits to Alameda Research, the firm\u2019s trading arm.<\/p>\n The exchange\u2019s multi-billion dollar collapse led to a sharp downtick in crypto prices, and US federal authorities arrested Bankman-Fried the following month.<\/p>\n Last November, a US jury\u00a0found<\/a> the former FTX chief executive guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud against FTX\u2019s customers; wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud against Alameda\u2019s lenders; conspiracy to commit securities fraud against FTX\u2019s investors; conspiracy to commit commodities fraud against FTX\u2019s customers; and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The jury only deliberated for four hours before reaching a verdict.<\/p>\n Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, says Bankman-Fried stole more than $8 billion worth of his customers\u2019 money and committed one of the largest financial frauds in history.<\/p>\n \u201cHis deliberate and ongoing lies demonstrated a brazen disregard for customers\u2019 expectations and disrespect for the rule of law, all so that he could secretly use his customers\u2019 money to expand his own power and influence.
