Miden seeks to introduce high throughput parallelized execution to Polygon\u2019s line-up of Ethereum scaling solutions.<\/p>\n
Polygon, one of the top teams working on Ethereum scaling solutions, launched the alpha testnet deployment for Miden, its upcoming STARK-based rollup.<\/p>\n
Announced on May 6, Polygon\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0developers\u00a0can\u00a0experiment with executing\u00a0simple\u00a0smart contracts\u00a0including\u00a0asset transfers, token minting, and faucet development on the testnet.<\/p>\n Polygon emphasized that Miden\u00a0is designed\u00a0to facilitate high-throughput parallel transaction execution. Unlike most blockchains, networks that support parallelized execution do not have to rely on linearly sequential transaction verification, unlocking greater throughput.<\/p>\n \u201cPolygon Miden is a zero-knowledge rollup for private, high-throughput applications,\u201d\u00a0Polygon\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in its documentation for Miden.\u00a0\u201cDevelopers can build applications\u00a0that are\u00a0infeasible on other systems [including] high-throughput privacy-preserving dApps for DeFi… and on-chain games with languages such as Rust and TypeScript.\u201d<\/p>\n Miden\u2019s\u00a0alpha testnet users can also launch public and private accounts and\u00a0notes<\/a> \u2014 which facilitate\u00a0private parallelized execution on Miden.<\/p>\n Miden expands\u00a0Polygon\u2019s suite of Ethereum scaling solutions, which include\u00a0its PoS Chain sidechain, ZkEVM zero-knowledge rollup, and modular Chain Development Kit.<\/p>\n While Polygon ZkEVM currently offers the\u00a0greatest\u00a0throughput and privacy of\u00a0Polygon’s\u00a0mainnet solutions, its adoption has been\u00a0sluggish<\/a>\u00a0compared to rival zkEVM networks since its\u00a0deployment<\/a>\u00a0on March 27, 2023.<\/p>\n According to L2beat, Polygon ZkEVM currently hosts a total value locked (TVL) of $159.1 million. However, Polygon plans to unify its\u00a0ZkEVM and PoS Chain<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which boasts a TVL of more than $1 billion \u2014\u00a0in a bid\u00a0to combine\u00a0ZkEVM\u2019s\u00a0features with PoS\u00a0Chain\u2019s\u00a0sizable user base and TVL.<\/p>\n This\u00a0positions Miden as\u00a0Polygon\u2019s\u00a0solution for specialized high-throughput applications, including on-chain order book-based exchanges, complex web3 games, and advanced wallets leveraging account\u00a0abstraction<\/a>. By contrast, the ZkEVM-PoS Chain will provide a sizable ecosystem of users and protocols that dApp developers can plug into.<\/p>\n Rollups bolster the scalability of Ethereum by processing transactions on Layer 2 before bundling them for batched finalization on\u00a0Ethereum\u2019s\u00a0mainnet. Rollups secured by zero-knowledge proofs, also known as ZK-rollups, allow transaction verification while revealing minimal data to the broader network.<\/p>\n Polygon first\u00a0announced Miden<\/a>\u00a0in November 2021, touting the\u00a0chain\u2019s\u00a0use of zk-STARKs \u2014\u00a0which were\u00a0pioneered by\u00a0StarkWare<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 to further improve transaction privacy compared to other ZK-rollups. At the time, Polygon said zk-STARKs allow the creation of proofs that\u00a0\u201cverify that a program was executed correctly, without the need for re-executing the program or even knowing what the program was.\u201d<\/p>\n Elley Habiba, a web3 developer, told The Defiant that zk-STARKs also offer security benefits over competing architectures for Layer 2 networks.<\/p>\n \u201c[Zk-STARKS] are special because they\u00a0don’t\u00a0rely on a\u00a0‘trusted setup’\u00a0\u2014 a process that\u2026 could be a security weakness,\u201d\u00a0Habiba said.<\/p>\n However, Habiba noted that L2s using zk-STARKs typically require\u00a0increased storage costs compared to\u00a0other zk-rollups.<\/p>\n In its May 6 tweet, Polygon emphasized that Miden clients can generate proofs locally, reducing the network load associated with zk-STARKs.<\/p>\n \u201cMiden can locally generate proofs for their own state transitions without\u00a0having to disclose\u00a0the state to the network.\u00a0and\u00a0client-side proofs lower the burden on the network,\u201d\u00a0Polygon said.<\/p>\n The price of Polygon\u2019s MATIC token is up 6.9% over the past seven days, but tumbled 4.2% in 24 hours alongside the broader crypto markets, according to CoinGecko.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Miden seeks to introduce high throughput parallelized execution to Polygon\u2019s line-up of Ethereum scaling solutions.
