United States lawmakers quizzed SEC Commissioner, Caroline Crenshaw on her crypto views in recent months. This comes as the Senate considers her for another term with the Commission. In the run-up to the session, crypto enthusiasts expressed discontent with her views on the asset class amid wider U.S. regulatory uncertainty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lawmakers Screen SEC Commissioner\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

US lawmakers brought up the decisions made by the SEC Commissioner as she seeks another term. In a July 11 Senate Banking Committee meeting, <\/span>Crenshaw<\/span><\/a> cited the risk involved in the global spot market. Sen Bill Hagerty pointed to popular reports of her disapproval of spot <\/span>Bitcoin ETFs<\/span><\/a> even after the landmark Grayscale court ruling that ushered those products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Crenshaw noted that her decisions are based on public interest findings on the particular products citing risk in the industry. In her testimony, she highlights the need to build trust in the market while reducing bad actor activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It means ensuring investors have access to appropriate and truthful disclosures that help them make informed investment decisions. It means ensuring that investment professionals fulfill their obligations to customers and elevate the interests of investors above their own. And, it means balancing the interests of those who participate in our markets to help ensure smaller players have the chance to compete.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Sen Hagerty expressed the views of the crypto community adding that he was troubled by the SEC Commissioner\u2019s position because crypto is an emerging technology. Furthermore, he flagged the push of climate decisions stating that it\u2019s beyond the SEC\u2019s reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

US Regulatory Uncertainty<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The SEC and lawmakers have been criticized for the current regulatory loophole in the United States. Uncertainty in rules has sparked several lawsuits from the Commission against industry executives. In addition, crypto users have lambasted regulators for stifling growth in the market. This year, the SEC\u2019s SAB 21 was overturned by Congress but backed by the White House. Furthermore, the uncertainty between the financial regulator and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (<\/span>CFTC<\/span><\/a>) regarding crypto jurisdiction is another industry concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
