A THORChain developer says he\u2019s stepping away from the crypto protocol after a vote to block North Korean hacker-linked transactions was reverted \u2014 while another validator has also threatened to call it quits over the saga.<\/p>\n
\u201cEffectively immediately, I will no longer be contributing to THORChain,\u201d the crosschain swap protocol\u2019s core developer, only known as \u201cPluto,\u201d wrote<\/a> in a Feb. 27 X post.\u00a0<\/p>\n Pluto said they would remain available \u201cas long as I am needed and to ensure an orderly hand-off of my responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n Pluto\u2019s exit comes after THORChain validator \u201cTCB\u201d said<\/a> on X that they were one of three validators that voted to stop Ether (ETH<\/a>) trading on the protocol to cut off North Korean hacking collective Lazarus Group.<\/p>\n That vote \u201cwas reverted within minutes,\u201d THORSwap developer Oleg Petrov said<\/a>. \u201cHalting a chain is an operational setting. It requires 3 node votes to be effective. 4 for be reversed,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n TCB later wrote<\/a> on X that they\u2019d also exit \u201cif we don\u2019t rapidly adopt a solution to stop NK [North Korean] flows.\u201d<\/p>\n The Lazarus Group has been using THORChain to move some<\/a> of the $1.5 billion worth of crypto it stole from the crypto exchange Bybit on Feb. 21. The increased volumes continued into Feb. 27, finishing the day at around $705 million.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the FBI has urged<\/a> crypto validators and exchanges to cut off<\/a> the Lazarus Group and confirmed earlier reports that North Korea was behind the record Bybit hack.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWhen the huge majority of your flows are stolen funds from North Korea for the biggest money heist in human history, it will become a national security issue, this isn\u2019t a game anymore,\u201d TCB said.<\/p>\n THORChain founder John-Paul Thorbjornsen told Cointelegraph he has no involvement with THORChain but said that none of the sanctioned wallet addresses listed by the FBI and the US Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control \u201chas ever interacted with the protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe actor is simply moving funds faster than any screening service can catch. It is unrealistic to expect these blockchains to censor, including THORChain,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n In separate X posts<\/a>, Thorbjornsen said he has \u201cnot been served by any authority, nor aware of any node that has\u201d and that<\/a> the protocol \u201cdoes not launder money.\u201d He added Lazarus Group\u2019s ETH to Bitcoin (BTC<\/a>) swaps typically end up at centralized exchanges \u201cwhere they are swapped for fiat.\u201d<\/p>\n He told Cointelegraph that THORChain nodes are churned out if they don\u2019t follow the protocol\u2019s rules, which include processing inbound swap transactions.<\/p>\n
